This small and beautifully maintained woodland nature reserve is absolutely fantastic, obviously cared for and carefully tended but at the same time feeling completely wild and natural. A brilliant resource for children to interact with nature, and for anyone to just take a few minutes out of the big world and immerse yourself in a peaceful, tranquil natural setting.
Hirst Wood Nature Reserve is a lovely spot if you’re after a quiet escape into nature without going too far from town. The reserve offers a mix of woodland and riverside scenery, with the River Aire running alongside parts of the trail, which adds to the peaceful atmosphere. The paths are generally easy to follow and suitable for a relaxed walk, whether you’re on your own, with family, or walking the dog. It’s especially nice in spring and autumn when the colours really stand out. There’s plenty of wildlife around too—birds, squirrels, and the occasional glimpse of something more unusual if you’re lucky. One of the best things about Hirst Wood is how calm it feels compared to busier parks nearby. It’s not overly commercialised, so you get more of a natural, untouched vibe. That said, it can get a bit muddy after rain, so decent footwear is a good idea. Overall, it’s a great local nature reserve for a peaceful walk, a bit of fresh air, and a break from the usual busy routine.
Absolutely beautiful place to take the furbabies for a walk.
Great small nature reserve next to the hirst locks. It has a large variety of flowers and small shrubs. Plenty of seats an small paths to explore. Fairly quite, has a pond which had a couple of dragon flies. Also a lot of pond skaters. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
Absolutely beautiful, my favourite walk, Dowley Gap to Baildon Green. Has everything you could wish for, birdsong, dappled sunlight falling through the trees, the river, the occasional canoeist or rower, cows in the open fields, ducks, geese, sometimes a heron. Lovely old mossy gnarled trees, little streams joining the river, a weir with the loud noise of rushing water.
