Hockley Woods

Hockley, United Kingdom•4.8(121)•Country Park, Nature Reserve

Explore over 130 hectares of ancient woodland featuring diverse tree species, woodland walks and rich biodiversity in Essex's largest remaining wild wood.

Hockley Woods spans over 130 hectares and represents the largest remaining area of the wild wood that covered Essex following the Ice Age 10,000 years ago. The woodland forms a complex mosaic of different tree species, each thriving in its preferred conditions—oak and sweet chestnut on higher ground, birch on acidic soils, hornbeam on wet clays, and willow, hazel and ash along the streams. Visitors can enjoy unrestricted access to the woods with two way marked walking trails available. A walk leaflet is available from the Council Offices to help guide exploration. The woodland is particularly valuable for its ancient plant species such as wild service tree, wood anemone, wood spurge and cow-wheat, which only grow on the undisturbed soils of ancient woodlands. The site is suitable for families of all ages, with free entry and facilities including unrestricted access and a car park off Main Road (SS5 4RN). The woods are open daily from 7am to 6.30pm. Hockley Woods has been managed using historical coppicing techniques to maintain its ecological value, creating a mix of sunny and shaded areas that support diverse wildlife including wildflowers, insects, birds and mammals, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and families seeking outdoor exploration.

Wonderful example of ancient woodland - probably the counties best - and unlike many others it is still traditionally managed in many areas, via coppicing, leading to a wonderful range of glades and rides in which a range of butterfly species are found. In particular the Heath Fritillary - which can be found in particularly high numbers - as well as Silver-washed Fritillary and White Admiral. Lovely displays of Bluebells and Wood Anenome in spring.

Grown up in Hockley, so I know the woods well took my dog and work mate over there. Both bloody loved it 👍🏻 when I was sorting my life out. I would walk around for hours taking pictures 📸 thinking of ideas 💡 for my barbershop I was about to open. Always friendly, I should know living in Hockley for over 30 years my thinking place 🤔 😅

Very muddy this time around. Lots of path options. Lovely seeing so many people out with their dogs and horses. Nice playground by the entrance for the kids as well as a food a drink van.
