The landscape is dotted with historic features, including gated entrances (now fitted with cattle grids) that reflect its Saxon and Norman heritage—the name "Port Down" derives from the words for "gate" (porte) and "hill" (dun), literally meaning "the gated down." Attended the unveiling of a memorial stone to operation Overlord (D-Day). A respectful service that was well attended.

My friend and I had enjoyed a great afternoon and decided we should try and get some exercise before we finish our day.... We parked up on Hungerford Common and went for short walk.... enjoyed fresh air, lovely common and surprised how many cows on common. Took photos. Plan to revisit common and hopefully have a picnic if weather holds.....
