Visit websiteWe had a fantastic visit to Inigo Jones Slate Works with two 13-year-olds, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The tour was fascinating, with plenty to see and learn about the history of slate mining and craftsmanship. The highlight for the children was definitely the workshop at the end, where they got the chance to try chiselling into slate themselves. It was such a hands-on, memorable experience and a brilliant way to finish the visit. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable throughout. We’d highly recommend a visit for families- it’s educational, engaging, and something a little different! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nice café and butchers for local meat and preserves. Can recommend their steak pie and home made chips👍. Also some nice gift ideas made from, yes you guessed it, slate!
We wanted some slate to face some damaged bricks at home. Mr Jones could not have been more helpful. He found us a couple of pieces perfect for the job and was most interesting to chat to. Still working at the very ripe old age of 79! What a man!
As an alternative to the stately homes and gardens, I went to the Inigo Jones Slateworks, just south of Caernarfon. Wales is the world‘s biggest producer of high-quality slate; demand has reduced by about 90%, but this place is still one of the leading slate workshops. The slateworks initial product was slates for schools and then moved into roof & building tiles, memorials, signage, garden items and commemorative products. They have a self guided audio tour, which is excellent and takes you through all the steps from receiving the slate to finishing/shipping it. You walk through their work yard and into various sheds with huge saws, sanders, planers and lettering machinery. It was amazing to see all the piles of slate waiting to be worked on and then all of the odds and ends and off cuts from pieces they already made. Very interesting and I’m glad I went.
Visited today & able to bring our dog in too. Took about an hour to walk around, very interesting to learn the history. Given an audio guide which was very good. Were also give a small piece of slate to engrave with a chisel yourself. There are piles upon piles of pieces of slate everywhere, I guess waiting to be used. There were a couple of tradesmen working but they didnt interact. Shop is very good with some beautiful pieces. Cafè on site with indoor & outside seating & a butchers. Needs a bit of a tidy up tbh but interesting to visit. Cost £7 each for concessions.
