🫏What an amazing place. Everyone who works and volunteers here are so caring and willing to talk. They have well over 100 Donkeys from all corners of UK and even abroad. So many different characters and didn't know how many breeds there are. The donkeys showed some hilarious behaviour when let free in the field. So well looked after and rehabilitated. I got the impression that they do more than the RSPCA would. Great setting and free entry...but please donate or buy their reasonably priced drinks. £2.50 for a bit chocolate ☕
Plenty of parking and entry by voluntary (and unmonitored) donation, so why not stop by and meet some of the hundred-plus donkeys? You can't feed them but you can pat them, if you - and the recipient donkey - dare to get close to the electric fence. Some show signs of their hard lives before getting to the sanctuary, so full credit to the folks running the place for giving the donkeys a happy home. The jumble sale in the big shed was an unexpected treat, if you are looking to buy other people's stuff that would otherwise be binned, for the most part.
I adopted a donkey here as a gift for my husband, I'd only read their work on the Internet. We managed to visit today, I was amazed by the amount of donkeys they have, and its all done on the extremely hard working volunteers and small donations. Walk around the donkeys, a coffee and ice cream and an adhoc talk from a friendly volunteer meant we spent a pleasant hours or two with a gentle walk amongst these gentle animals.
Nice little donkey sanctuary, nice to visit whenever throughout the year, can tell they look after the animals here. Left a nice donation and bought a couple of bits from the shop to help support a place that you can see really do care and look after these donkeys. Keep up the great work and I’m sure we will visit again
We came for my wife's birthday. She has always been a lover of animals and has a soft spot for donkeys. This wasn't just like heaven for her, it truly was her happy place. The donkeys are clearly all very well cared for, and are very happy to partake in a tickle or a scratch. Little ones be careful, they do like to test to see if you have any food, and they test with their mouths. There are plenty of warning signs. Please don't let that put you off. It's only a caution, they really are very gentle. The stables, fields and yard are really clean and tidy (as much as you would expect a working yard to be). All the staff and volunteers were really friendly and happy to chat. We adopted Lady. A beautiful donkey who had come over on a boat from Germany, and that was supposed to be her final journey. These guys stepped in and here she is, at the sanctuary living her best life with 139 friends. It is free to go to, which is great for families on a budget. But I would take a bit of cash with you as your heart won't forgive you for leaving without parting with something to help these beautiful soles. The only negative I will say about the sanctuary is that it is an hour away from where we live, and we had to travel through the centre of Reading to get to it. If it was closer or even an easier journey, my wife would be volunteering every weekend. She actually left a bit sad that she wouldn't be able to. She has a wealth of experience working with horses and general farm animals, and this would have been perfect for her. We will be returning to catch up with lady and to generally enjoy the peacefull nature of these wonderful animals. Thank you to the sanctuary for your great work, we will see you again very soon.
