Kenley Common is a mixed area of open chalk grassland and woodland, with an interesting 20th history. During WW2, part of the common became an airfield. Here, aircraft were assembled and tested before entering military service at the Western Front. The woodland walks are pleasant enough, but the airfield is definitely the main attraction here. It survives today and is used by a gliding club. Surviving blast pens and defensive structures make this best preserved Battle of Britain fighter airfield in the country. Information boards around the site provide more detail on its history. There's easy pedestrian access from a number of nearby roads. At the top of New Barn Lane there's a good view of the chalk rock face of Riddlesdown Quarry. We visited the area while walking the London Loop, and were impressed by the well preserved airfield and informative signage. The nearby Wattenden Arms pub is a great place to stop for lunch.

Approaching through the woodland from the valleys on either side, it is a surprise to suddenly emerge on a large, open expanse with Kenley Aerodrome in the centre. Kenley Common surrounds the aerodrome and contains information boards describing the importance of the aerodrome in the Second World War. A very pleasant walk.

A lovely place for a walk with plenty of options - woodland, grassland and some more tricky paths also. Bring the kids to watch the gliders also on a good day! Nice pubs locally also (*see my other reviews 🤣)
