Kiveton Community Woodland

Kiveton Park, United Kingdom•4.5(331)•Country Park, Nature Reserve

Explore 57 hectares of woodland, grassland, and wetland habitats transformed from a former colliery into a thriving community destination with accessible paths and local art.

Kiveton Community Woodland is a 57-hectare natural space in South Yorkshire that has been beautifully transformed from derelict mining land into a thriving landscape. Following remediation through the National Coalfield Programme, the site now features diverse habitats including woodland, grassland, and wetland areas that support remarkable biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy maintained footpaths through scenic landscapes, with a flat accessible area near the Collier Road entrance ideal for families with pushchairs. The woodland is home to community-focused features including a community orchard, sculptures by local artists such as the cast iron "Dreaming of Sky" which commemorates the pit ponies that once worked in the mines, and an on-site amphitheatre near the main entrance. The space offers year-round appeal with spring wildflowers carpeting the grassy areas and regular community events including the Kiveton Brass Band Festival. Dogs are welcome throughout the site, making it perfect for families with pets. As an open-access destination with free entry, Kiveton Community Woodland serves as a well-loved hub for outdoor recreation, informal play, and nature appreciation suitable for all ages.

Many routes around & through are wide solid surface paths suitable for wheelchair users and push chairs. You can follow a variety of routes around the site, some are over flat grass terrain but paths are wide hard surface, others go around, up or over the old pit top area (mound) which has a variety of terrain including woodland, small ponds, dykes, long grass and there are combination of solid surface paths and natural paths that are narrower. If you don't want to go up and down hill and want a flat route to walk there's a wide hard surface path that goes 360 degrees around the bottom of the site where approximately half way around (facing Harthill), you can get up to the pit top with the least amount of uphill walking. Its only about 15 metres from the bottom part to get up to the top and then the solid surface paths are a gradual incline to the left walking towards the horse sculpture and views across to kiveton waters or the solid surface path to the right which is flat over and across the top & descends down on the other side to the large flat grassed area, a huge grassed auditorium bowl perfect for playing ball with your dog, again there is a flat solid surface all around these and you can walk in any direction a short or long as you like. Walking to the top will get you amazing 360 pan am views towards Harthill & Kiveton waters. The site is huge it's got something for everyone very popular for dog walkers but beware there is only one bin which is at the entrance at the bottom, near the stone circle/sports centre. You can access the site from Hard Lane (unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs) , kiveton waters (gravel car park with a lot of pot holes not suitable for wheelchairs or push chairs) or from near the sports centre where parking is tarmac and entrance is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs.. Plenty of parking spaces. Perfect all year round, I've seen deer multiple times as well as a large variety of birds. It's a haven for wildlife and a really beautiful place. I highly recommend it

Idyllic spot standing on old coal mining area. Great for a relaxing walk around or, if you're a bit more sporty, a super jogging area with a testing incline. Monument remembering those miners that lost their lives down the pit in the parkland. Also former site of Kiveton pit head baths.
