Landguard Fort

Felixstowe, United Kingdom•4.6(1.9k)•Heritage Site, Museum, Nature Reserve

Explore a historic 400-year-old coastal fort, nature reserve, and museum complex with walks, wildlife, maritime views, and family activities.

Landguard Point is a comprehensive heritage and nature destination spanning 33 hectares on the Suffolk coast, combining history, wildlife, and outdoor discovery. At its heart stands Landguard Fort, a centuries-old fortification that once guarded the entrance to Harwich Harbour and remains remarkably well-preserved. Visitors can explore the fort's defences, enjoy rooftop tours, and step back in time through exhibits and role-play experiences suitable for families. The site encompasses multiple attractions within one location. The Landguard Nature Reserve is designated as both a Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest, featuring rare vegetated shingle habitats that support diverse flora and fauna, including ground-nesting birds. A dedicated bird observatory allows nature enthusiasts to observe and track wildlife throughout the year. The Felixstowe Museum offers 14 exhibition rooms showcasing local maritime history and heritage collections. Families benefit from varied activities including accessible boardwalks, guided walks and cycle routes, the View Point for watching cargo ships and ferries in Harwich Haven, and the Harbour Foot & Bike Ferry connecting to neighbouring areas. The 1940s Tea Room provides refreshments in the fort, while additional cafés serve the wider site. The destination is dog-friendly and pushchair-friendly, with events and seasonal activities throughout the year, making it ideal for families with mixed interests in history, nature, and outdoor exploration.

A historic round fort, originally Tudor and much adapted and changed right round to the 1960's. A maze of tunnels to explore in the thick walls. Interesting exhibits and great for children to climb around and explore. 2nd floor only accessible via step external steps . Don't miss the local Felixstowe Museum located within the fort but with it's own separate entrance (round to the right when facing the main entrance )

This place was a real surprise as I was expecting it to be quite small but there was loads to see and you could see how it had been used in various eras. Very chilly on the day we visited but well worth it.

Like my grandson, I never tire of visiting Languard Fort. Its history is so interesting - built in the reign of Herry VIII, remodelled and extended a few times, and used for different purposes over the years, even during the first and second World Wars and the Cold War. The displays are excellent and the information boards very informative, supplemented by audio and video recordings which are often triggered as you walk into a room. For children, there is usually a trail for them to follow, spotting things as they go round. Well worth a visit. Remember to check the website for opening times.

Family ticket is £22 for 2x adults and 3x kids. Adults ticket is £8 so not cheap, but we were there for 2 hours and didn't even do the audio tour or dilly dally. Audio tour would be a good idea if you have the time. Meandering staff are very nice and approachable with good knowledge as you would expect. They seem proud of the fort which is nice. Loads of parking. 30mins free, 2 hours £3.50 or 4 hours. Decent cafe nearby is always busy and good walks along the wild beach.

Absolutely the best thing in Felixstowe, super friendly staff and a very well preserved fort with plenty of info about its history plus an optional audio tour for free, however the coffee also tasted like it was from the forts earliest times… had a hint of roast beef…. Added to the experience lol, 10/10
