Interesting to see and visit. It has free admission, so you really can’t complain. The reconstruction of the spa as it once looked was nicely done and told a good story. There are few objects or historical artifacts on display from that period. The section about Leamington Spa (the town itself) that follows is somewhat messy and poorly organized. There is no clear route, so you jump from the 19th century to the 13th, then back to the present, and then to the Romans. At the time of my visit, the top floor was largely closed due to leaks. It felt a bit disorganized overall. It is a shame that there was nothing more to read about or see of the library, which used to be the swimming pool, or how it was reflected in the design. A minor downside was that the restaurant was very crowded—too crowded—and the staff did not seem to notice or assist me, even though I had been waiting for a while. They came across as rushed and reactive. I’ll attribute this to the heat and busy conditions that day. It did not otherwise affect my visit. The museum is definitely still worth visiting if you are in the town, but keep in mind that you will easily spend 2–3 hours there.
Superbly restored building free entry, local artists display & preserved original Spa which was a fascinating piece of history
I visited on a weekday. There was an art exhibition by West Midlands artists. A video showed how the sculpture of the unknown refugee in Jephson Gardens came to be. The Turkish baths were interesting if not a little creepy: a shower that sprays needle-like jets of water at you before and after therapy. 😬 The area on the development of Leamington as a spa town was interesting. There was a section on Dr Jephson and his philosophy of therapy...drink the water, walk, drink the water, walk, repeat daily. I appreciate that the museum is free to enter and that you can combine a visit to the museum with a visit to the Jephson Gardens opposite. The area is walkable.
Not the most stunning collection, but it’s free and worth visiting for the Pump Rooms architecture. Shame that the ceiling of the old swimming pool has been obscured.
Wow, what an amazing place to visit with #ReadyFreddie today. With an added bonus. We came to Leamington Spa from Nuneaton by train with the aim of visiting this museum. It was closed when we were last in town. We had a good bumble around the spa museum & the art gallery when a young lady from Yorkshire & one from Lancashire told us about a free tour which was starting soon. It was sold to me at the "Free" word but wow. Alan is a super tour guide & he took us behind the scenes & into some otherwise closed off areas. Loads of local history & someone dawdled so we had to forgoe the quiz but standing in the pool (library) & the offices (tiles) was exceptional. The set (corridor) for part of the "Sweet Thing" video was surreal. Absolutely incredible visit. If nothing else a painting purchased for the nation by the Daily Mail! We liked the Arabian spa area, even if it's a mixture of cultures!
