The library of Birmingham is absolutely fantastic. The building is super sexy from the outside. It looks like a gigantic spaceship. I think it's Matthew Bolton's setup of his original office is up on the top floor along with an area where you can go outside with natural trees and shrubs.

Amazing reading and study/work place. Good viewing gallery and open gardens; ideal to get Vitamin D during the winter months.

Must be one of the most impressive libraries in Europe. Plenty of open spaces indoors and two viewing galleries. There's somewhere to buy refreshments, but not sure of opening times. The staff are helpful with knowledgeable answers. The Shakespeare room is very informative. The only negative is the stairs. I got out of the lift and one of the doors to other parts of the library wouldn't open.

Incredible multi-level bookstore. Admission is free, and entry is allowed from a certain time onwards. The staff is very friendly. Inside the bookstore there is a secret garden with a view over the whole city, as well as several study rooms and common areas typical of bookstores.

There are quiet study areas, casual reading zones, and plenty of natural light, making it easy to wander, discover new books, or settle into a corner to read. Level 2 Is packed with reference materials, newspapers, and more curated collections. It feels like the heart of the library, bright and open, and perfect for spending a few hours diving into something new. Level 3 Has the discovery terrace and gallery space. The terrace is a nice outdoor break with some greenery and city views, and the galleries host exhibitions that change regularly. Levels 4 to 6 Continue the journey through books and reading areas. These floors have comfy spots, study desks, and special collections. Level 6 also hosts community events, workshops, and learning spaces. Level 7 Is the secret garden, and honestly it is my favourite part. The greenery, flowers, and city views make it a peaceful escape, perfect for sitting with a book or just taking it all in. Level 8 Quiet and ideal for focused reading, with great views over the central atrium and lower floors. level 9 Houses the Shakespeare memorial room, another favourite. Walking in feels like stepping back in time, the ornate woodwork, rare texts, and calm atmosphere make it feel magical. Overall, the Library of Birmingham is more than just a place to read or borrow books. Every floor feels thought out, from the lively lower levels to the peaceful upper terraces. The design encourages exploring, discovering new spaces, and taking moments to pause and enjoy your surroundings. The combination of modern architecture with the historic Shakespeare memorial room creates a unique contrast that is visually stunning and inspiring. Add in the secret garden, which is the perfect mix of calm and greenery high above the city, and it becomes clear why this library is one of Birmingham’s most remarkable spots. It is a place that makes you want to linger, explore every level, and appreciate the thought and care behind every detail.
