We visited Llanishen Reservoir for a team walk with work and it was a really lovely spot. The views are beautiful and it’s a great place for a peaceful stroll. There’s also a nice café on site which is perfect for a coffee stop. One slightly unusual thing is that you’re not allowed to walk on the grass. I understand it’s to protect wildlife or planting, but it does mean you have to stick to the paths. Because of that, I’m not sure it’s the easiest place to bring toddlers or very young children—it might be tricky keeping them from wandering off onto the grass. It felt more suited to older children, adults, or retirees looking for a calm walk and nice scenery. Also, a little tip—avoid very windy days! It’s quite exposed. We grabbed a coffee outside and the foam literally blew off the top 😂 and our side salad didn’t stay on the plate for long either! We would’ve sat inside, but it was really busy so outdoor seating was the only option. Overall though, a lovely place with great views and definitely worth a visit.
This is a very good reservoir to walk around. Even when it's cloudy!!! This is probably our 15th time walking around this reservoir and a very good experience again!!!! It's in a very good area and also has a cafe!!!! (That we did not use). Overall very good walk and reservoir 😇🥹.
Had a fantastic & lovely walk around the reservoirs yesterday. No DOGS allowed. Visitors Center & cafe looks amazing! Rent a paddle board (or bring your own) or boat and make your visit more enjoyable (insurance needed). Footpaths are likely to be muddy during rainy days, especially on Llanishen side. Not a single puddle on Lisvane side.
The reason that this site was saved from a housing development is clear to see. What a beautiful place to visit. Superb setting plus now the addition of a cafe makes this a great place to come for a walk. No bikes or scooters allowed but this makes it all the more peaceful and enjoyable. 90 mins free parking as well at the on-site car park.
So the reservoir visitor centre has finally opened this summer which is very good news. I went there on a Sunday morning (well 11am) and was surprised to see no boats or anything on the water? Most of them were 'moored' in the middle of the reservoir so I assume not available for rent (also, the rent price is ridiculous at £20 plus). The café upstairs is very pleasant although the queue has taken forever, not sure why this was going so slow. You can sit either inside or on the balcony, which has a nice view. They serve breakfast, full roast dinner and other options, and have tea and cake as well. I was disappointed to see my bicycle as the only one parked there, everyone else came by car🙄 which is perhaps not so bad provided that at the very first second I stood my legs on the path around the lake I was chased by a guard and screamed at that cycling is not allowed. No idea why, there are two pathways - one higher up, with the view and most people walk there, and another one lower down which was entirely empty so no idea why I was not allowed to cycle? Anyway, it did not make me feel welcome. Rules just for the sake of rules. I want to come back to try the lunch (it did look good) but not sure I'm ready to be screamed at again. Also from what I noticed, dogs are not allowed in all areas, so if you want to have a walk around the smaller reservoir, you'll have to leave your dog behind (this is to protect the birds' habitats).
