This is a wonderful museum showing the evolution of transportation in the UK, mainly London. It has numerous models of the first built buses and trains. History of these developments are also well documented and shown. Definitely worth a visit when in the area.
Immersive museum covering the history of public transportation in London from the dawn of trams and railways up to the present day, situated within an impressive former market building in Covent Garden. The exhibits are well presented, with information panels explaining more about each bus, taxi, train and tram. A standout feature is the ability to go inside a number of the vehicles, which really helps with imaging what travel onboard would have been like. Interactive displays are another prominent feature, including an Underground driving simulator. Once you're in the museum, none of these cost extra. The impact of transport on London's social history is considered, with exhibits on how easier travel changed lives of working people, and how the Metropolitan Railway was instrumental in developing the suburbs to the northwest of the city. Facilities are good, with a café, large gift shop well stocked with themed gifts and books, and accessible toilets. The museum is laid out over multiple levels but all are accessible by stairs or elevator. The museum is open 10:00 to 18:00 daily, with last entry at 17:00. At the time of our visit, adult tickets were £27. There's no doubt this is expensive, but it does permit an unlimited number of return visits within the year.
This museum is a fantastic experience and incredibly affordable! Admission is about £25 (roughly $31 USD), which actually acts as a yearly ticket. If you travel to London more than once a year—even coming from the US—it's a brilliant perk because you can return without having to pay again. The facility itself is exceptionally clean, with everything in perfect order and very easy to follow. The exhibits are logically laid out across three stories. You start back in the 1800s with the early carriage systems, then move into the era of locomotives and trams. Down on the bottom floor, you'll find a great collection of buses alongside some other vintage trams. While it’s not a massive museum, it is packed with highly informative panels. One of the best parts is the immersion: you can actually walk through some of the vintage trolleys to see exactly what they looked like back in the day, or peek through the windows of others. There are also a few interactive exhibits that are great for children. Overall, it was a perfectly organized, clean, and highly informative experience. Definitely worth the stop!
Lovely few hours out, very child friendly. There is a cafe, small play area and lots of little bits to keep them entertained. There is a free cloakroom service for bags, coats etc. We loved this and used it, wish more places offered this as it did save carrying rucksacks and coats around with us. You can go on some of the transport vehicles etc. There is an activity that you can do ( its like a train driver game ) it takes 7 minutes so if its busy you will be waiting a while, we didn't do this but as there was about 15 people in front of us. There is a stamp trail you can do to help keep track of where to go next. The cafe looked nice and it was all very well maintained. Toilets were great , clean and well stocked. There is a gift shop but if your like me and have kids and hate gift shops then if you ask the staff by the desks on the way out they will let you out the doors before the shop 😅 Great place, not too expensive and a nice few hours out.
Our visit to the London Transport Museum was absolutely fantastic — a perfect family day out that delighted all three of us! My wife, our 5-year-old son, and I spent an entire afternoon exploring the fascinating history of London’s transport system, and we could easily have stayed even longer. From the moment we stepped in, we were impressed by how beautifully the museum is organized. It takes you on a journey through time — from the horse-drawn carriages of the 1800s, through the early underground trains, right up to the sleek modern buses and Tube carriages we see today. The displays are engaging and full of interesting details that bring the city’s transport story to life. What made this visit truly special, though, was how family-friendly it is. Our son had an incredible time with all the interactive exhibits and play zones designed for children. He especially loved pretending to drive a red double-decker bus and exploring the mini Tube simulator — he didn’t want to leave! The museum does an amazing job of blending learning with play, so both kids and adults are entertained and informed. The staff were warm, helpful, and clearly passionate about the museum’s mission. The museum shop was also well-stocked with lovely souvenirs — our son insisted on getting a toy Routemaster bus to remember the day. Overall, the London Transport Museum is a must-visit, whether you’re a history enthusiast, a transport lover, or a family looking for an educational yet fun experience. We left with smiles, great memories, and a newfound appreciation for how London moves!
