Visit websiteLydiard Park is an absolute gem and easily one of the best places to spend a day in Swindon. Whether you are looking for a lively family outing or a peaceful afternoon stroll, this historic estate truly has something for everyone. The sprawling grounds are impeccably maintained, offering a wonderful mix of wide-open green spaces, tranquil woodland trails, and a beautiful, serene lake. The stunning Palladian architecture of **Lydiard House** and the beautifully restored **Walled Garden** add a lovely touch of heritage to the visit, making it feel like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the town. Families will absolutely love the fantastic and well-equipped children's play area, and it is an incredibly dog-friendly spot with plenty of room for pups to run around and explore. Whether you are packing a summer picnic, renting a BBQ space, grabbing a coffee at the on-site cafe, or simply wanting to soak in the fresh air and stunning scenery, Lydiard Park never disappoints. It is a wonderfully relaxing environment and I highly recommend it for a perfect day out!
Beautiful large open spaces with stunning lake. Easy to find walking trails. Clean green areas. Cost of parking makes more sense to pay for all day rather than 2 hours. Lots to do.
Excellent local park for a relaxing walk and viewing the swan family. A lot going for the warmer seasons. It was refreshing since my 2018 visit. Will be back to tour the garden in my next trip.
Located on the western edge of Swindon, Lydiard Park is a 260-acre country estate that serves as a grand testament to Georgian ambition and Palladian design. For over 500 years, it was the ancestral seat of the St. John family, Viscounts Bolingbroke, who transformed a medieval deer park into a sophisticated landscape of rolling lawns, ornamental lakes, and formal gardens. The architectural heart of the park is Lydiard House, a Grade I-listed mansion whose striking 1740s stone facade conceals opulent state rooms filled with original family portraits and intricate plasterwork. The landscape is a masterful blend of the formal and the wild. Behind the historic Coach House lies the Georgian Walled Garden, a rhombus-shaped sanctuary recently restored to its 18th-century glory. It features precise box hedging, rare fruit trees trained against warm brick walls, and a colorful array of perennial blooms that change with the seasons. Beyond the gardens, the park opens into expansive woodlands and a recently reinstated lake, where wide, surfaced paths provide a polished environment for walking, running, or cycling. Whether you are exploring the "hidden" ice house, admiring the medieval monuments in the adjacent St. Mary’s Church, or watching the sunset over the lake, Lydiard Park offers a refined and deeply historic escape into the Wiltshire countryside. Tips for your visit: • The Walled Garden: While the main park is free to enter, the Walled Garden requires a small entry fee. It is one of the best examples of a Georgian flower garden in the country and is particularly stunning in late spring when the tulips are in bloom. • St. Mary's Church: Do not miss the church located right next to the house. It is widely considered one of England's finest small churches, home to the spectacular "Golden Cavalier" effigy and the unique 17th-century St. John Polyptych. • Jungle Parc: For those seeking a bit of high-energy adventure, the park also hosts "Jungle Parc," an aerial treetop course that offers a unique "bird's-eye view" of the historic woodland. • Dining in History: The Coach House Tea Rooms offer a sophisticated setting for lunch or afternoon tea, often serving treats made using traditional recipes that reflect the estate’s long history. Lydiard Park is a resilient and evocative landscape where the domestic elegance of the 18th century meets the vibrant, open-air energy of a modern community park. 🌳🏛️🌷
This is a great area for family days out. It has plenty of different walking routes and stuff to do. There is a wheelchair accessible café with a kids park for all ages. There are plenty of BBQ areas around to use all you have to do is pay for the parking. It is a really beautiful area with a walled garden and pathed routes throughout which are good for access. They usually have large festivals on the fields in the summer such as the hot air balloon festival. They hold a park. Run weekly at this place! Well worth the parking! Highly recommend! Please see my photo for parking fees. I line payment only as all the machines were not working.
