Explore a working forest in Cheshire with scenic walking trails, mountain biking routes, and stunning views across the Peak District from hilltops like Shutlingsloe.

Macclesfield Forest is a working forest located in east Cheshire near Macclesfield and Wildboarclough villages, offering visitors a diverse range of outdoor activities suitable for families of all ages. The forest features well-maintained walking paths ranging from low-level strolls to more challenging uphill routes, with spectacular panoramic views across the Peak District and towards Shining Tor, Cheshire's highest point at 559 metres. Mountain biking enthusiasts can enjoy dedicated cycling routes through the forest, with new paths added to the Peak District Cycling network. The area encompasses four scenic reservoirs, including historic Ridgegate from the late 19th century and Trentabank, opened in 1929. Visitors can discover the iconic Shutlingsloe, known locally as the 'Cheshire Matterhorn' due to its distinctive shape, alongside historic sites such as Forest Chapel with its traditional August rush-bearing ceremony. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot the largest heronry in the Peak District, along with badgers, weasels, and red deer, particularly during early morning visits. Macclesfield Forest is dog-friendly and pushchair-friendly, making it accessible for families with young children and pets. A visitors centre with a dedicated ranger service and picnic area provides essential facilities for visitors. The forest is free to enter and offers regularly updated photography galleries showcasing the ever-changing scenery throughout the seasons.

Just about the worst place to bring a dog is the Peak District so thank goodness for Macc Forest where dogs can run free. Don’t miss the stunning views across the reservoir from the top which is a vertiginous clamber. A lovely afternoon out.

Absolutely love this park. A good option for a weekend walk, it’s just so peaceful and relaxing, especially autumn is already here, we really enjoyed the colourful forest.

Great place to walk. Parked at the main car park pay and display. Very busy but we managed to get a spot. Walkedup the North Bank to the top. Views across the reservoirs and forest were spectacular in autumn colours. Would highly recommend.

Such a nice walk. You can take an easy walk around the reservoir or for the more adventurous climb up to the top and admire the amazing views. There are plenty of places to park for free. Toilets in the nearby pub by the reservoir or there is a hut with loos and parking at the foot of the forest.
