Mardley Heath Wood is a large nature reserve extending to 37 hectares, showcasing natural regeneration following 20th-century gravel extraction. The site features a fascinating ecological tapestry, with birch trees and heathland species thriving on sandy soils alongside original oak and hornbeam woodland. Visitors can discover around 40 historic hornbeam pollards that provide clues to the reserve's past use as a wood pasture common in medieval times, when local people grazed animals and gathered resources. The reserve offers varied terrain suitable for different abilities and interests. A dedicated multi-user trail accommodates all ages and abilities, while a bridleway welcomes horses and cyclists. The site features a free car park on the north side of Heath Road with foot, bicycle, and vehicle access. Sandy soils support rare solitary bees and wasps, making it an excellent destination for wildlife observation and nature education. Management focuses on enhancing wood pasture common features through careful conservation practices, including mowing regimes, selective tree thinning, and coppicing to encourage diverse woodland structure and natural regeneration. Great place to go for a walk with the dogs, especially in the heat. Super shaded mixed terrain. A year round spot I walk my dog at, has a car park and litter bins! Great place for kids to also explore the woodland. Lovely in spring when the bluebells come out!

A lovely open woodland and fields. The trails were very muddy because of all the rain but my 2 dogs loved it. There is a good sized carpark and also plenty of laybys to park in. I will definitely be going back but when the weather is a bit better and it's not quite so muddy.

Been going up Mardley pretty much over the past 25 years or so! Swamps to MTB trails and now suits my RC Crawler perfectly!

This has been walking distance from home for years and I never knew about it! I'm so glad to have discovered a lovely local place to go for a quiet walk and experience nature, especially during lockdown. Bring some shoes you don't mind getting muddy, or like me, come ill-prepared and just go for it anyway! An endless walk through the woods with some good bumps and ditches on way. What's more to love? 😁

Beautiful nature reserve with lots of paths to avoid people and social distance. Especially during autumn this is a blace to go. Have a wander through the birches and enjoy the colorful leaves, hunt for mushrooms and watch the Jays and squirrels squabble for acorns.
