This trail starts at Marple Bridge, where the main road crosses the River Goyt. There are a number of car parks close by and they all appear to be free of charge - a pleasant change. Access into the route is at the far end of the school 'drop off' car park. This section along the riverside is a pleasant walk, suitable for all levels as well as robust wheeled carriages. As you progress along the northern edge the trail becomes more difficult with wheelchairs and push chairs finding difficulty. As you progress towards the viaduct it becomes very steep and slippery and if you want to avoid this I would recommend you take the trail on the left that cuts across and pops up on the canal a short way down the flight. The lock flight itself is charming with lots of old buildings along the way. Each lock is individually numbered so you know exactly where you are. It is recorded as a very steep flight but as the flight follows the curve of the canal it doesn't appear so and you don't get the ladder effect of other, straight flights. At Top Lock the trail takes you over the canal and down some steep descents on the way back north to Marple Bridge. The route does, in fact, take you through the Garden House Farm but lots of people appear put off by the signs for Private Land, No Public Right of Way, of which there are many. However, there is one sign that says walkers are welcome to pass through and I spoke to the landowner to verify this. So, carry on past all the signposts!! A good walk with a variety of terrain. Good footwear would be the order of the day if you intend to do the whole trail, and I found that a bit longer than the distance quoted. If you are a narrow boat/canal enthusiast, then this is a 'must do'.
Lovely canalside walk with locks and aqueduct. Plenty of variety in the scenery and a well maintained towpath.
The weather was v good ,plenty of photo opertunitys, all round, fields to play football extra shops ,pubs, bus services, train station
Attractive location on Peak Forest Canal. Nice walking down the tow path. Marple is a pleasant town with good selection of shops and and parks. The Saturday craft and gift market is worth a visit.
Good cycle from Fairfield, Droylsden. You need a torch for the tunnel and pretty fit for a steep decline. A Memorial park with facilities and local shops close by for refreshments.
