Midsomer Norton South Station

Midsomer Norton, United Kingdom•4.7(231)•Heritage Site, Museum

Ride vintage trains along the restored Mendip mainline and explore a Victorian-era railway station filled with heritage attractions and family activities.

The Somerset & Dorset Railway at Midsomer Norton South offers visitors a nostalgic journey back in time on one mile of the once-mighty mainline that connected Bath, Bournemouth and beyond until its closure in 1966. Family visitors can enjoy scenic train rides hauled by diesel shunters or popular DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) trains, departing from an authentically preserved Victorian-era station. Beyond the trains themselves, the venue features a fascinating museum dedicated to the railway's remarkable 90-year history, allowing visitors to learn about this important transport heritage. The beautifully restored 1950s buffet car provides refreshments during visits, while additional attractions include a World War II Pill Box and Anderson Shelter—authentic structures that offer insights into domestic life during wartime. The station grounds showcase lovely gardens maintained by dedicated volunteers, and visitors can explore the operational Victorian-era signal box to understand traditional railway signalling systems. A Victorian station shop offers railway-themed gifts, local delights, and books, while the S&D Emporium stocks second-hand railway books and model railway items. Operating most weekends, the railway welcomes visitors of all ages—from youngsters experiencing the excitement of heritage train travel to railway enthusiasts and families seeking a distinctive day out combining education, nostalgia and fun.

This is such a hidden gem of a railway. The line is only small but we had the opportunity to take the train multiple times which was delightful. The layout of the station was wonderful and made for both a relaxing and interesting afternoon out. The museum, Anderson Shelter and Pill Box were all amazing to visit (though I did get jumpscared by the gas mask wearing mannequin) with so much packed into such small spaces. The buffet coach provided us with simple refreshments that made for a lovely lunch. The entire time (both in the buffet coach and on the train) I was envious of those who were able to travel in these carriages in the past as the seats are so wonderfully comfortable compared to the ones of the mainline rail network today. My family are already planning to revisit during one of the upcoming Brake Van Ride events. I'm looking forward to coming back many times in the future and hopefully seeing the additions that are being planned come into fruition.

Sadly no trains running today (19th April), but the gift shop and buffet were open and was able to wander around the station at leisure. Will definitely be back when the trains are running. The gentleman in the gift shop was very welcoming and knowledgeable and the ladies in the buffet car gave me a friendly welcome too 🙂🚂

A pleasant trip. Worth an hour or two here. I would have liked to try the cream tea in the train carriage. I took the ride for £10. I'd say that was a little expensive, but if you take in the museum and walking around (I was not expecting the WW2 stuff), it is reasonable as a package and helps keep the place going. There were plenty of volunteers around, it's great to see so many people have a passion to keep this bit of history going.

The station has been beautifully restored, maintaining its charming historical character while offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff and volunteers are the real stars of the show — friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about preserving this piece of local heritage. They go out of their way to make visitors feel at home, sharing fascinating stories about the station’s history and the Somerset & Dorset Railway. The attention to detail across the site is impressive, from the restored station buildings to the well-kept gardens and rolling stock. Whether you're stopping by for a leisurely visit, a ride on one of their running days, or a special event, it’s clear that a lot of love and hard work goes into everything they do. Highly recommended for families, history buffs, or anyone looking to experience a lovely slice of railway nostalgia. Can’t wait to visit again! 🚂✨
