One of our favourite places. Steeped in history and beautiful scenic ruins. Wonderful little church (St Kennetts) worth a visit. Take some change to pop in the box room help with the management and maintenance of this Wonderful example of English History.
Beautiful area to drive to. Free car park with bins. Interesting and impressive ruins to walk through and a river where the dogs could've paddled in better weather. A nice walk right next to it for a leg stretch too.
A small, beautiful church that requires careful maintenance, which is of course ensured by the wonderful locals. If you haven't been there yet, I highly recommend it! And don't forget to leave a small donation! This special place deserves careful maintenance so that it can serve for generations to come.
A beautiful stop in a lovely small town. Make sure you have good footwear as it can get a little muddy. Learn a little history, walk through the town, and reflect by the water and relax. There is also a nice little church next to it to see (pictures included.)
What an absolute hidden gem – Minster Lovell Hall and Dovecote is pure magic! Tucked away in the peaceful Oxfordshire Cotswolds beside the gentle River Windrush, these 15th-century ruins feel like stepping straight into a fairy tale (or a ghost story!). Built around 1430 by William Lovell, 7th Baron Lovell, as a grand manor house for the powerful Lovell family – it was once a splendid riverside estate with a great hall, ornate porch, vaulted ceilings, carved figures, and that stunning southwest tower still standing proud. Wandering through the atmospheric remains (free entry, any reasonable time!), you can almost imagine the banquets and intrigue – especially with the chilling legend of Francis Lovell (Richard III’s ally) who vanished after the Battle of Stoke in 1487. Rumour has it he hid in a secret vault here and starved when his servant died... spooky moans reportedly heard on windy nights! The intact dovecote nearby is a lovely bonus, and the setting by the river with ancient trees is utterly serene – perfect for a picnic or quiet reflection. English Heritage does a brilliant job keeping it accessible (dogs on leads welcome, just mind uneven surfaces and sheer drops). A proper escape from the crowds – I could’ve stayed for hours soaking it all in. If you love history, ruins, or just beautiful spots, don’t miss this one. Already planning my next visit! 🏰🌿
