A great day out with amazing trains and memorabilia. Well worth a visit.

Museum of Scottish Railways is one of the two attractions to visit Bo'ness with children. It's located central to this small sea side town in West Lothian and recommended to access by car. There is plenty of space at the car park and it's free of charge. The only ticket office, where tickets can be purchased or collected, is located on a platform. In order to get up there it's required to walk alongside the platform next to the cafe and through the venel at the old train station. On a busy day, as it turned to be on my arrival, estimated time to buy / collect tickets could be up to half hour. Departs of the main attraction, which is an old steam train, are at 10.30, 12.30and 14.30. I recommend to arrive early if it's a school holiday or weekend. Though, staff waited for everyone to get on train, which caused 20 minutes delay from original departure time. As a adult with 3 years old child I payed £17. Train goes on a coastal route passing by three small train stations, and stopping briefly at one before last stop. At that point most of the passengers leave to the platform to see train switching from one side of the train to another. The journey takes half hour one way and conductors would instruct all passengers, which seats to take. It's a quite pleasant journey inside and old train. Some snacks and hot drinks are being sold on the way. Museum itself is accessible either through the gate or bridge, which are at the entrance to the car park. Even though, there is a lot of information to read, and some of it contains quite a technical knowledge, for my 3 years old child it turned to be such a great attraction. Museum offers a chance to touch and play with some of the exposition, which is what is needed especially for children. The museum of Scottish Railways appeared to be very family friendly tourist attraction in this small town. I would definitely recommend it to families with small children. On a public holiday or during school holidays booking in advance recommended to avoid disappointment.

We went for the Christmas train ride with Santa so museum entry was included. The staff were all super friendly and knowledgeable and keen to make sure everyone had a great day. Parking is free and plentiful even on a super busy day. There is a cafe on site and a picnic space. Everything is largely on flat ground but with some steps up to individual trains and carriages. If going in winter it is cold so wrap up warm.

We knew of the station but we had no idea there was a railway museum behind it! I love that after decades of exploring and visiting Scotlands attractions, I can still find new places and be surprised at how good they are. This little museum doesn't seem to be very well known and we were surprised at how quiet it was. The engines and carriages are all laid out in rows and you can go inside many of them. Some of them are still a work in progress and others have been lovingly restored. As well as the main storage area, there is also a gallery that you can visit, which allows you to watch the trains being worked on. The museum isn't large and thee isn't a cafe, however, it's directly opposite the heritage railway and there is a shop and cafe there. We managed to spend about an hour in the museum, then another hour walking around the yards and watching the various steam trains. All in all, it was a lovely day out, my kids had a blast.
