Y Tymbl, United Kingdom•4.5(259)•Country Park, Nature Reserve, Playground

Explore over 200 acres of woodland trails through a restored coalfield landscape with diverse wildlife, native trees, and marshy meadows perfect for families.

Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park is a remarkable 200+ acre nature reserve that showcases the natural recovery of a former coalfield and farmland. Visitors can discover a diverse landscape featuring coniferous plantations mixed with native woodland including Beech, Birch, Oak, Hazel, and Ash, alongside open mosaic habitats and wildflower meadows abundant with orchids and rare plants like the Whorled Caraway, the county flower of Carmarthenshire. The park offers a network of waymarked trails and paths suitable for exploration by foot, bicycle, and horse (along designated routes). The varied terrain and protected habitats support extensive wildlife, making it an excellent destination for nature observation and outdoor education. Dog walkers are welcome and encouraged to visit, though dogs should be kept under close control, particularly during the nesting season from March to September. This accessible outdoor attraction is ideal for families seeking free, active recreation in a natural setting. The park demonstrates successful land restoration and ecological recovery, combining historical heritage from its coal mining past with contemporary conservation efforts. With opening hours from 6am to 10pm, it provides flexibility for morning walks, afternoon adventures, and evening exploration.

I took our baby daughter out for an hour in the pram this morning. A beautiful day matched with a beautiful park. The loop has plenty of little paths with rivers, woodland and activities for little ones. We "Tip-toed as quiet as a mouse" and "Trotted like a horse" near the river! A lovely walk, very highly recommended.

Visited Mynydd Mawr today, beautiful place to walk the dogs, lots of different little paths to wander off and explore the nature and wildlife. Lots of little streams trickling with the calm sounds of water, lots of mini bridges to cross. If you're looking to pack a picnic there's lots of benches to sit at and other seats to rest your feet. Unfortunately not very wheelchair/disabled access friendly. Parking is free.
