Visit websiteEasy parking and has a nice well-priced cafe and there are toilets. It is interesting museum with most of the exibits indoors. There is a tour you can do and it is recommended but that does go outside a bit. Some of the areas are unheated so we were glad we had hats/gloves. There is a lift so most areas are accessible
We had a really lovely visit to the Museum a couple of weeks ago. We were so glad we'd booked the tour as it was so interesting and just brilliant to see around the different parts of the mine and to learn of the various processes. Our tour guide Neil was terrific, telling us loads of facts and stories, and answering the many questions we posed! We loved the exhibitions too - especially the social exhibition as it was fascinating to read so much about the importance of mining in our country's history and how it was woven into the fabric of so many families and communities like “Nitten”. Lots of amazing photos throughout the exhibition. Why we even learned about “Goth” pubs and were so intrigued we came back out that night to visit the local Dean Arms. Although late in the day, we had enough time for a cuppa in the Museum's wonderful cafe. Our children visited the Museum many years ago with a school trip, but this was our first visit, and we would strongly recommend it.
Spent a lovely Friday afternoon here, the guided tour was great. You learned a lot about the local history and it was extra special because our tour guide Neil was a miner during the 80’s which made the tour much more personal & interesting! Thanks Neil ☺️
Informative and also a close to realifeze experience of what life underground was like. It is important for people to visit.l to understand the conditions that past generations worked in. Easy to get to from edinburgh city center by bus or train.
Great day out. Thanks to guide Dave (80) for his time & enthusiasm. Remember - when Dave's generation are gone - there's no one left who actually did this kind of work. Cafe is good, plenty of toilets, all clean. Staff friendly and very approachable. Hopefully museum can get funds in place to get the winding engine in motion again. Fabulous cathedral of an engine and engine house.
