We went on a twilight bird walk with the NT and the Dorset Wildlife trust and had an amazing time hearing loads of Nightjars - something we never see in the north! Very informative and educational. In the day we had seen two spoonbills out on the lagoon so altogether a great day for bird watching. There are often volunteers in the hides helping you spot things with a telescope but plenty of birds close by too. Lovely couple of hours walk around the island with lots of history.

It's a great place to get away and enjoy nature, with lots of different walks over heathland, through woodlands and wetlands, (paths are well marked and mostly level, but can be uneven - take a good pair of walking boots). There's a beach on the south shore, camping, and bird hides in the wetlands. The ferry from Poole takes around 20 minutes and gives great views of the bay (bit breezy mind!). There are toilets at various places, and a couple of coffee huts, plus the main cafe near the visitor centre. Sadly on my visit the famed red squirrels remained elusive. 😔

Visiting the Brownsea Island is a privilege. The National Trust site is very well maintained for walkers and birdwatchers alike, with good footpaths and several bird hides. One is dependent on the ferry from Poole Quay to get there, and get back, and the last return boat was at 5.00 pm, so one must plan the walk with enough time to return in time.

Peaceful Wildlife Haven with a Pricey Crossing Brownsea Island is a gem for nature lovers and walkers alike. The ferry crossing from Poole is a bit steep—especially when paired with the extra entry fee if you're not a National Trust member—but once you're on the island, it’s easy to see why it’s worth the trip. The wildlife is wonderfully diverse: red squirrels dart through the trees, sea birds skim the shoreline, and the whole place feels like a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the mainland. Walking trails are well-maintained and offer stunning views back towards Poole and Sandbanks, making for a thoroughly enjoyable circuit. Tip: If you’re a National Trust member, bring your card—entry’s included, which softens the blow of the ferry fare.

Our first trip to Brownsea Island. Saw a wide variety of wildlife, we even saw the red squirrels! Very peaceful and quiet, various walking trails throughout the island. Would recommend around 3 to 4 hours to explore fully. We also ate at the café, nice Cornish pasties and a good selection of sandwiches.
