Explore a restored clay pit transformed into a thriving nature reserve with wildlife, bird watching, and outdoor educational activities.

New Earswick Nature Reserve is a designated educational nature reserve set on the site of a former clay pit and brick works established in 1902. The historic industrial site was gradually abandoned and reclaimed by nature, eventually being formalized as a Designated Educational Nature Reserve in 1973. Today, the reserve serves as a sanctuary for outdoor study of natural history and wildlife observation. The reserve offers visitors opportunities to explore diverse habitats and observe the flora and fauna that thrive within its boundaries. Activities include bird watching, bee-keeping, fishing, and guided tree trails. The site features remnants of its industrial past, including a concrete pump base, well, and brick paving, adding historical interest to nature walks. The reserve is managed by a registered charity and a group of trustees dedicated to conservation and education. Access is by arrangement or during scheduled open days, making it suitable for families, school groups, and nature enthusiasts interested in ecological education and outdoor exploration. The reserve is dog-friendly and offers free entry, though booking is required for group visits. Visitors can discover how a former industrial site has been successfully restored into a vibrant natural habitat.

First time visit and what a stunning place. It was a cold and crisp day when we went, lake was iced over and it was quiet. Took the kids for a walk in nature and it disappoint. Saw many grey squirrels, magpies, Robins, and other species I wasn't able to identify. Can't wait to go again, especially in the spring, to see what else we can spot.

NOT OPEN 24 HOURS. Fenced off and key holders only, due to vandalism. Drove all the way here and left disappointed, after a short walk around the perimeter. I’m sure it’s a lovely place but Google maps opening hours are sadly very misleading.

Went here for a Halloween nature trail. It was brilliant. Loved the scary pumpkin head man who kept appearing through the trees. Very well priced care and biscuits. Tasty sausage sandwich. A walk round the lane after the trail was lovely.
