Today we did the Axe Making 🪓 workshop at Oldfield Forge and WOW… what an amazing day! We had Alex with us for the whole day, and what a lovely gentleman he was. He guided us throughout the day, showing us exactly what to do and making the whole experience so enjoyable. We also had lunch at the café, and I must admit, it was the tastiest meat feast pizza 🍕 I think I’ve ever had! It came with a free homemade salad 🥗 on the side 😋 Delicious, and all made by the lovely chef Kerry! 👩🍳 We couldn’t help ourselves but grab an ice cream sundae 🍦 too—and honestly, it was the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted! 😍 Everything was amazing value for money. The grounds were beautifully tidy with no rubbish in sight, and the toilets were fresh and clean. Overall, we had an absolutely amazing experience. We just wish we didn’t live so far away! 😢 A huge thank you to all the staff for being so lovely and making our day so special. We would definitely recommend Oldfield Forge and hope to visit again one day! 😀🪓🔥
Spent the day at Oldfield Forge making a knife, and after eight hours of hitting hot metal with a hammer, I have a whole new respect for blacksmiths... and a sore arm to prove it. I'd expected the day to be a bit more one-to-one, but it's more of a shared workshop experience. That said, the team clearly enjoy what they do, and their enthusiasm is infectious. The amount of help you get can vary depending on who's free at the time, so there were moments where I wasn't sure if I was forging a knife or inventing a new garden tool. Despite that, it's a genuinely great experience. You leave with something you've made yourself, which is incredibly satisfying, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The only real letdown was the food. It's convenient to have it on site, but it's definitely on the expensive side for what you get. My suggestion would be either improve the quality to match the price or knock a few pounds of, after eight hours of swinging a hammer, you'll have earned every bite. Overall, I'd happily return and would recommend it to anyone wanting to try something different. Just go expecting a shared learning experience rather than personal tuition, bring your patience, your appetite, and maybe a packed lunch if you're watching the pennies
The dagger making workshop was incredible! Our guide, Jai was fantastic, and really helped make the day even more fun and special. It was hard going in the heat, but we did it, and what a stunning piece it is. You can create your own design and get to choose from some beautiful handles. Jai put the finishing touches to our dagger. Impressive to watch. This is a brilliant workshop, highly recommend.
Such an awesome place & experience! Recently went for a 5 hour "Just for fun" session and had an absolute blast. It was my first time trying blacksmithing but the staff were all extremely helpful and on hand for giving tips and pointers throughout the process without just doing it for you. Had a large range of options that I could have chosen to forge but opted to make a scroll knife and really happy with how it turned out. Food in the cafe was also excellent and the staff were happy to accomodate the fact that I wasn't able to pay until later in the day. Think I might have caught the bug as already considering booking another experience..
Absolutely fantastic day learning how to make an axe. The team they have teaching are a great bunch of people. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life and im sure the axe will see some work too. I even tipped the two guys teaching us on our course a half a large leaf spring each as i had some kicking about. Would recommend this to anyone thinking about having a go. Even watching other groups making various items was fascinating. So happy! And thankyou oldfeild forge.
