Situated on the north-western edge of Hitchin, Oughtonhead Common Nature Reserve is widely considered the "jewel in the crown" of North Hertfordshire’s natural spaces. This 17-hectare Local Nature Reserve is a rare and vital ecosystem, defined by the crystal-clear waters of the River Oughton. The river is fed by ancient chalk springs rising from the Chiltern Hills, creating a pristine habitat that supports a diverse range of wildlife, from flashing kingfishers to the elusive water rail. The landscape is a captivating mosaic of wet and dry habitats. Visitors can wander through lush fen woodlands, explore the area's only reedbeds, and stroll across expansive grazing commons. A unique feature of the reserve is the presence of English Longhorn cattle, an ancient breed with dramatic, sweeping horns that graze the grasslands year-round to maintain the delicate ecological balance. Whether you are following the surfaced "River Walk" alongside the chalk stream or searching for rare orchids in the meadows, Oughtonhead Common offers a sophisticated and restorative connection to a landscape that feels unchanged by time. Tips for your visit: • The "Hitchin Waterfall": Don't miss the overflow for the old mill stream, known locally as the "Hitchin Waterfall." It is a charming and picturesque spot located at the eastern end of the common. • Wildlife Watching: The reedbeds are a hive of activity in the spring and summer; listen for the distinct songs of reed and sedge warblers. If you visit at dusk, you might even spot little or tawny owls hunting over the meadows. • Accessible Trails: The "River Walk" features surfaced paths and kissing gates that are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, making the beauty of the chalk stream accessible to all. • Parking & Access: Limited parking is available at Swinburne Avenue Playing Fields or near Westmill Lane. Alternatively, the common is a pleasant walk from Hitchin town center via the Hitchin Outer Orbital Path (HOOP). Oughtonhead Common is a resilient and enchanting sanctuary, offering a rare glimpse into the unique beauty of a Hertfordshire chalk stream landscape. 🌳🐄💧
Wonderful walk. Saw the wonderful long horned cows close up. We even saw a black squirrel and heard the woodpeckers. So lovely.
Oughtonhead Common is a wonderful local nature reserve with easy walking paths along the River Oughton. Perfect for a relaxing stroll, wildlife spotting, or walking your dog. The scenery is stunning all year round, with meadows where cattle graze, abundant birdlife, and open grassy areas ideal for picnics. Benches are scattered throughout the reserve, giving you plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the tranquility. Some paths can get muddy after rain, so good footwear is recommended.
Walked the past on a wet weekend in February and it was really nice. The path itself was wide and easy to follow, alongside the river with some nice views through trees and over some fields. In parts the fields of cows were a bit boggy, so it was a risk to stray off the path, but enjoyed exploring the reserve. Found a tiny car park nearby that could fit about 5 cars in it, though it wasn't full on a cold and wet day. There seemed to be limited other parking options nearby.
Great natural nature reserve and park, lots of natural trails, lots lovely flowers and plants. Animals. Lovely river. Big field and little park the children enjoyed. Only down side not much parking spaces there is about 6 depending on car sizes and peoples parking skills, but can park outside peoples houses and side walk as walk up.
