The rolling hills, open fields and peaceful surroundings make it a great place to escape for a few hours and enjoy nature. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy walking and stunning views. Very nice for a family walk, with free roaming highland cows you can walk right up to, if you are brave enough 😂 Sheep a plenty and nice panoramic countryside views. Good for fitness is the circular walk around the top. Ultinlmately it is as steep as you make it. Not to be confused with Scotland or North Wales but nice enough and manageable for small / young families. My kids are 8 & 9. There are no immediate public toilets or other amenities visible but pretty sure there was a nearby pub or two. Well worth a stroll OR for some intense hill training (as I saw).

Absolutely beautiful place with some of the most peaceful countryside views in Hertfordshire. 🌿🐑 The rolling green fields, fresh air and stunning scenery make it the perfect spot to escape from busy city life and reconnect with nature. The sheep roaming around freely made the experience even more special — such a calm and wholesome atmosphere. The sunsets and skies here are unreal, especially on a bright day with the clouds stretching across the hills. Perfect for walks, photography, picnics or simply relaxing and enjoying the view. One of those hidden gems that reminds you how beautiful the English countryside can be. Highly recommend visiting if you love nature, peaceful vibes and scenic landscapes. 💚

Straddling the border between Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, Pegsdon Hills and Hoo Bit Nature Reserve is widely considered to offer some of the most dramatic and breathtaking views in the North Chilterns. This 79-hectare reserve, managed by the Wildlife Trust, is a masterpiece of ancient chalk downland. The landscape is defined by steep, rolling escarpments, hidden coombes, and the iconic "Deacon Hill"—a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) that looms over the surrounding clay vales. The hills are a sensory marvel throughout the year. In spring and summer, the chalk grassland transforms into a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers, including rare orchids, moschatels, and fragrant wild herbs like marjoram and thyme. This floral abundance supports an array of rare butterflies, such as the dingy and grizzled skippers. Overhead, the sky is almost always occupied by Red Kites and buzzards, which use the powerful thermals generated by the steep hillsides to soar effortlessly, often appearing at eye level if you are standing on the ridges. Hoo Bit, a quieter pocket of the reserve, offers a more intimate experience—a sheltered wildflower meadow surrounded by ancient woodland, providing a serene contrast to the wind-swept heights of the main hills. Tips for your visit: • The Summit View: Make the climb to the top of Deacon Hill. On a clear day, the panoramic views stretch for miles across the Bedfordshire plains, and you can clearly see the historic carvings of the Icknield Way winding below. • Wildlife Hotspot: Visit in June or July for the peak butterfly and orchid season. Bring binoculars; the area is a fantastic spot to watch skylarks and wheatears performing their aerial displays. • The Raven at Hexton: After a strenuous hike, head to the nearby village of Hexton. The Raven pub is a local favorite for a traditional English lunch, or you can visit the Lavender Tea Room for a more delicate treat. • Footwear Matters: The terrain is steep and can be slippery, especially on the chalky paths after rain. Sturdy walking boots with good grip are essential for navigating the hillsides safely. Really enjoyed this walk today. Took about 2hrs to do the full loop around Pegsdon Hill and Deacon Hill. Parked at Hexton car park as mentioned by others (which was very busy as it’s tiny). Super muddy at the moment so proper hiking shoes or wellies would be best! Loved seeing the Highland Cows who were totally uninterested in humans but were happy to be photographed from a distance. Brilliant walk!
