Amazing house and grounds. Staggering art collection (paintings and sculptures) for a property like this. Nice pleasure garden and quite spectacular deer park with some incredible ancient sweet chestnut trees. Lots to see!
Great visit, managed to find a disabled bay and got a lift up to the house. Not overwhelmed by visitors, joined the 900years in 45mins tour around the house which was excellent. Very friendly guides, I particularly liked the placement of sofas so those with walking/standing difficulties could take refuge.
What a wonderful place! Everything was so beautifully curated and extremely well maintained. The house was packed with paintings and sculptures and the servants quarters give a glimpse into everyday life and the running of the house. Staff are friendly, polite and knowledgeable and the extensive grounds mean you need plenty of time to explore! Watch out for ghosts! 👻👻👻👻
A great experience inside and out. In the main rooms fabulous art examples from the old masters adorn every room, the artwork on the main staircase walls and ceiling are worth a visit on their own, beautiful! Outside the grounds and lake are well kept and you'll walk miles to take it all in. New toilets are a welcome addition.
Visiting this National Trust treasure is a day out all the family can enjoy. With deer park for those who enjoy a long walk and wildlife to watch to art lovers who can lose them selves with an old master; children too can find something to occupy their imaginations before a picnic in the grounds or cafe. The usual well stocked National Trust shop boasts local goods celebrating the house's association with British landscape artist JMW Turner. Even in Winter the formal gardens harbour Spring flowers ready to brighten the path from car park to house. Parking is £4 all day in 2025 or free to NT Members. Those with a wheelchair to navigate will find level routes and wide doorways. Though upstairs in the house will prove a no go. The guides are enthusiastic and will illuminate any of the many paintings for those who need to see more than what the basic lighting reveals. Good information reading matter is available for those too shy to ask a guide for background on something what catches your curiosity. Many sculptures add interest though some obscure the paintings! Children may find them on high plinths a bit awkward though naked bodies may not be what they came to see! In the servants quarters the kitchens and associated dairy room or larders are much more fun.
