Great place lots walks few strange men on cars tho on entrance
Great, get away from it all walks, acres of land to discover from meadows and woods to pathways fertile fields.
Large nature reserve on a working farm, with an extensive network of footpaths leading through open fields, pleasant woodland, coppice plantation and a small area of chalk grassland. Great views of the chalk downland and Medway valley in various places, and from the higher fields local landmarks including Rochester Castle and Cathedral and the Great Lines naval memorial are all clearly visible. Worth visiting at any time of year, but best in late spring and early summer when the bluebells, rare orchids and poppies are at their peak. Also good for golden colours in late autumn. Walks can be extended by crossing the local railway line to the Bush Valley, or leaving the reserve and heading out to Cobham Woods and Mausoleum. After rain and in winter, robust walking boots are advisable as some of the paths can be very muddy. The parking area only has a few spaces so can fill up quickly when the weather's good. Avoid the space nearest the entrance as there's often rubbish overflowing from the bin. If there's no space, the Bush Valley walk in Cuxton is a good alternative nearby.
A really beautiful nature reserve, with lots of pathways. There is alot of incredible wildlife to see here, and I visit often purely for this reason. Great place for walking a dog etc. The reserve seems well managed, as there is never that much litter when following pathways. There is however large quantities of litter within the woodlands. Unfortunately aswell, the nature reserve is a hot-spot for yobs on electric dirt bikes, the barriers make absolutely no difference to them getting in and out. This massively ruins the tranquility for me and no doubt the herd of highland cows in Cobham Wood, as well as other locals. It would be great to see some improvements in places, like worn out signs etc, and especially to create some sort of barrier that ultimately stops the yobs.
Lovely nature reserve with plenty of long walks. Being in the downs the paths can be steep. Paths were good in May. Parking can be a problem as the small car park off the main drag is always full. You can find street parking and walk under a rail tunnel.
