In August 2025 I visited Conwy, Wales, primarily to see the castle. Afterwards I came across Plas Mawr or "Great Hall," a townhouse from the late 1500s. Its 17 rooms are a showcase of Elizabethan ambition and extravagance, perfectly maintained by Cadw, the Welsh heritage service. There's a tower, herb garden and a large room just for brewing beer (a good investment considering the poor-quality water of that era). Well worth the time and reasonable admission fee of about 10 GBP. See cadw.gov.wales.

We ran upon this house by pure chance, after visiting Conwy Castle and I must say we enjoyed it even more than the castle! The material culture within, much of which has been restored with much effort & skill, is stunning and allows one to enter more vividly into the imagination of what it might be like to live in a world of the past. Beautiful colours, materials and even costumes! Lovely staff.

We've visited Conwy before, but we didn't stay long and somehow missed this gem! Saw some videos on it and had to have a look! Lovely staff, all very friendly and helpful. We loved our explore here, and at just over £10 entry, it was well worth it. They have a ticket deal with Conwy castle too, I believe, so if you're heading to both places in one day, I believe it's discounted, which is great :) Make sure you visit here if you're into history! A gem to visit. Large and well preserved, it gives an interesting insight into the world of luxury as lived by wealthy Elizabethans. Very well worth a visit.

I was genuinely impressed by how beautifully preserved this townhouse is - like stepping straight into another century. Despite the bustle outside, it was surprisingly peaceful inside, which made the visit even more enjoyable. The staff were warm and welcoming, and there was so much to explore: a fascinating array of rooms and a charming Elizabethan garden filled with a variety of plants. The ornamental plasterwork was a real highlight. One particularly lovely moment was meeting a friendly woman who not only offered to take our photo but also gave us a delightful mini-lesson in Welsh pronunciation and language. It added such a personal touch to the experience. The gift shop was well-stocked with thoughtful souvenirs, including a great selection of magnets. All in all, a hidden gem that’s well worth a visit.
