Explore the underground tunnels and industrial heritage of Purbeck's clay mining history with free entry and interactive activities for all ages.

Purbeck Mining Museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of ball clay mining in Purbeck and its narrow gauge railways. Visitors can experience what it was like inside a typical Purbeck clay mine by exploring an authentic underground tunnel, while learning about the miners and their families who shaped the region's industrial heritage. The museum offers engaging children's activities suitable for different age groups, including the Clay Mine Super Sleuth activity trail (ages 9-13), Count the Norden Nippers scavenger hunt (all ages), and The Norden Nippers Go To Sea picture trail (ages 5-8). The Woodland Clay Trail provides an additional outdoor experience where visitors can walk through the woods while discovering the history of clay mining at Norden. Entry is completely free, with voluntary donations encouraged to support the museum's conservation and educational work. Located at Purbeck Park near Corfe Castle in Dorset, just above Norden Station on the Swanage Railway, the museum is suitable for families with children from infancy upwards and offers a unique combination of indoor tunnel exploration and outdoor woodland trails.

Amazing place. History of local ball clay mining in Dorset. Plenty of old equipment and information. Situated next to Norden train station. Run by volunteers, no entrance fee, but a donation is very welcomed. A must visit if you in the area

Great museum with lots of informational content and interactive displays to provide an engaging time for all! The guide at the entrance was friendly, helpful and gave us lots of information to set the context and engage my kids (aged 9 and 13). We went on a family day trip to Corfe castle on the steam train to Norden (there is also a big car park at Norden next to the museum). Norden station is at the end of the trainline and the museum is conveniently located just behind the station and a 20-30 minute scenic walk away from corfe castle. Definitely recommend as a great addition to a trip to Norden and/or Corfe castle!

What a little corker of a place! I have been visiting this area for 60 years yet never realised that clay mining formed such a key role in its economy. Run by knowledgable volunteers who obviously have a passion for the subject, we were talked though the history of clay mining and shown examples of equipment, supported by some excellent written materials. Entry is free, but they do ask for donations (£2) to help cover the costs. I recommend a visit.

It's a really cute little museum about clay mines - worth a trip. Only take 20 minutes to have a look around. Showing the history of this local area with clay and the use of the train to transport the train. Please come and support the volunteers who could and chat about their jobs in the 60s. They're really friendly and answered all of our questions.
