Explore a Grade I listed steam-powered mill with 300 original Lancashire looms still operating via two historic steam engines.

Queen Street Mill is a Grade I listed building located in Harle Syke, near Burnley, Lancashire, and represents a significant piece of industrial heritage. Built in 1894 for the Queen Street Manufacturing Company, the mill operated as a working textile factory until its closure on 12 March 1982, at which time it was the last working steam-powered mill in the country. Following its closure, the mill was thoughtfully converted into a working museum that continues to maintain and operate 300 of the original Lancashire looms. Visitors can witness these historic machines in action, powered by the mill's two original steam engines, providing an authentic glimpse into Lancashire's textile manufacturing past. The museum offers families an immersive educational experience, showcasing the industrial heritage and craftsmanship that defined the region's economic importance during the textile era. This venue is suitable for families with children of all ages interested in industrial history, engineering, and cultural heritage. The indoor setting and pushchair-friendly facilities make it accessible for families with younger children. Queen Street Mill provides a unique opportunity to experience a fully functional mill museum powered by original steam engines, making it a distinctive attraction for those seeking authentic industrial heritage experiences.

During our visit, we were guided around the former factory by truly dedicated, kind, and helpful staff. You can see the massive steam engine—which is still operational today—the yarn-picking machines, and the impressive collection of 300 weaving looms. Every tool, screw, and exhibit is original and tells a story of history. I highly recommend visiting; it’s a great experience! Oh, and yes: you can park in the courtyard as well as along the entire length of the building, so there's no need to worry about that.

A very warm welcome to a very interesting museum explaining the history of the cotton weaving industry. Our personal guide, Richard, who worked at this mill for 40+ years was wonderful at explaining everything in ways we could understand it easily. I thoroughly recommend visiting this museum and taking the time to enjoy a guided tour, which lasts just over an hour or longer if you ask more questions and want things explained in more detail. Entry cost £5 per adult.

A fabulous Mill, wonderful to see the old and still working machinery, the weaving machines were in action on our visit, what a treat. We visited to watch a really good event all about Ethel Carnie Holdsworth... What an inspiring strong woman she was ( and is)... Friendly and welcoming staff, a small cafe on site and small gift shop too. Definitely worth a visit for adults and primary school children upwards.

Excellent place, lots of free parking, marvelous staff, huge weaving shed, great cafe, toilet facilities, little shop with some Calico for sale. Very friendly and educational, I lov d visiting here. Such a rich history to textiles in Lancashire. I went for a weaving workshop and a visit to the British Textile Biennial installation there. Just beautiful.
