Red Cross Garden

London, United Kingdom•4.7(289)•City Park, Heritage Site

Explore a beautifully restored Victorian garden designed by social reformer Octavia Hill, featuring historic layouts, volunteer-led tours, and family events near London Bridge.

Red Cross Garden is an award-winning historic open space that has been lovingly restored to its original Victorian design. Built in 1886 alongside cottages as a flagship project by Octavia Hill, a pioneering social reformer and co-founder of The National Trust, the garden originally demonstrated the importance of improving housing and meaningful occupations for poor workers. After decades of decline under municipal grass and tarmac, Bankside Open Spaces Trust secured Heritage Lottery Fund and council support to restore the garden's authentic features, with the Princess Royal officially reopening it in 2006. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful retreat from the bustling London cityscape, located just minutes from London Bridge and Borough High Street. The garden hosts regular volunteer-led tours highlighting key historic details of this important social housing scheme. Families can participate in after-school clubs, poetry readings, celebrations, and special events throughout the year. The space is available to hire for garden parties, corporate gatherings, weddings, and picnics, making it suitable for both casual visits and special occasions. The garden's rich heritage, beautiful Victorian layout, and community-focused programming make it an ideal destination for families interested in history and outdoor activities.

A very small local garden with a story behind it. Worth a visit en route to borough market.

Red Cross Garden is one of those secretly hidden place that out of sight to many but a real oasis for those knowing its existence. The park has a Maypole…if that’s not a special feature, what is it?!

Charming little garden , a peaceful haven . When you enter it is hard to believe that you are a few minutes walk away from the bustle of Borough Market , the A3 & London Bridge Station. The Shard stands clear to view. This is a theme replicated all over London. The garden & the cottages are the brainchild of Octavia Hill , a social reformer & one of the 3 Co founders of The National Trust. The cottages are presented in the " Mock Tudor " style . Behind , in Ayres St. are more cottages presented in the Arts & Crafts style. On the wall of Red Cross cottages you can find a blue plaque dedicated to Octavia Hill. Apparently the gardens fell into disrepair after the Second World War but in 2005 they were restored to their original state. Maintained by volunteers , you can now enjoy the beautiful pond , walk the winding paths or sit on one of the seats & relax in the sun or under the shade of the large tree.

I absolutely love the Red Cross Garden. It's so peaceful and the perfect spot to relax with a good book. There's even a lovely pond with waterlilies, surrounded by various species of flowers and plants. It’s a beautiful place to unwind and enjoy nature.

I am very fortunate that this lovely, small and well maintained garden is round the corner from my workplace. It's a wonderful little green space away from all the traffic of Borough High st. It features a variety of trees, plants and flowers that are well maintained by staff and volunteers. A great little spot if you just want to sit and eat your lunch (semi quietly). It can get very busy in the summer time but it's nice if you want to get away from the office for an hour ;-)
