Explore a 10-acre coastal nature reserve featuring sand dunes, reedbeds, and rare natterjack toads in their only Wirral breeding colony.

Red Rocks Marsh is a protected coastal nature reserve spanning 10 acres of diverse habitats including sand dunes, reedbeds, and marshland. The reserve is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and offers visitors the chance to experience a rich natural environment with distinctive features such as marram grass-covered dunes, expansive reedbeds dominated by common reed, and scattered alder and willow trees. The reserve is particularly renowned for supporting the rare natterjack toad, an extremely limited species in Britain protected by the 1975 Wild Creatures and Wild Plants Act. Red Rocks is home to Wirral's only breeding colony of this fascinating amphibian. Visitors can also observe over 50 species of flowering plants, including orchids and Danish scurvy grass, as well as a rich invertebrate fauna and diverse bird species that utilize the reedbed during passage migration. Accessible to the public via Stanley Road in Hoylake or along the beach from West Kirby, the reserve welcomes families and nature enthusiasts of all ages. Visitors are encouraged to keep to the foreshore and marked paths to protect the sensitive habitats. The combination of coastal landscape, wildlife-watching opportunities, and educational value makes Red Rocks an ideal destination for families interested in natural history and conservation.

We went to the red rocks nature reserve with our daughter, her husband, and our two grandchildren (ages 2 years and 6 months). We found a nice spot on the beach and had the grandchildren play in the sand for an hour or so. Otherwise the area is popular with walkers using the coastal path, or going out onto the mudflats (be aware of the tide though if you venture out there). Along the edge of the beach there are rocks which makes the surface difficult to navigate if you have mobility issues. Nevertheless the reserve is nice for a walk, or to spend a little time on the beach.

A reasonably easy access, coastal pathway from Hoylake to West Kirby or reverse. Lovely sea scape marsh wildlife and more.

The Northern most point of the Wirral peninsula is a sandy beach with nice flat walking across to Hilbre Island. Situated behind the Royal Liverpool Golf Club has easy access and some on street parking. Walkable from West Kirby and Hoylake.
