Really nice English Heritage site. The fort is interesting with lots to see. You can see it's been buried a bit to preserve it which is fine. It was definitely great to see something like this. I will say that it's a bit pricey at £14 each but that's normal for them. Definitely worth visiting, make sure it's a nice day!

The invading Roman army first came ashore here in AD 43, building a fortress to defend their bridgehead. Small museum and attached gift shop and a lovely quiet (if you come at the right time) Roman Ruin.

Fantastic little hidden gem! Deffo worth checking out if you're in the area. It is essentially all ruins as to be expected from a Roman fort built over 2000 years ago but the audio tour was so interesting and informative.

Amazing place to visit, currently open Easter to the end of October. A little off the beaten track but well worth it when you find it. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and volunteers. The museum and views from the top of the reconstructed Claudian gateway are fabulous. The amphitheatre is a short walk away. Lovely place for picnics and families to visit and unlike many places it is dog friendly provided they are kept on the lead. Don't follow a satnav as it may lead you astray. Turn onto Richborough Road and look for the EH information board. The car park is free but it does get locked at 5pm.

VISIT DATE: THU 30/10/2025 VISIT TIME: 13:15 - 14:25 Visited with my daughter and parents, whilst on holiday not too far away. This is an absolutely stunning ruin, managed by English Heritage. The imposing walls give an idea of the scale of the fort, with information panels placed around the site to explain what buildings would have been where. There is also a really nice museum with exhibits found at the site and you can do a free audio tour s as you walk round to learn more about the site and its history. Unfortunately, as we visited at the end of the season, the tour wasn’t available, but EH audio tours are very good, so would definitely recommend doing one if they are available. Entry is free for English Heritage members - check their website for entry fees for non-members, as well as opening times as the site is closed over winter. There is free parking and eco-toilets are situated at the carpark. This means that the toilets are quite smelly! As a ruin, this site isn’t fully accessible, with grass all around (wear decent footwear), but it is well worth a visit as it is great for exploring and also, like other EH sites, has the Folklore Creatures trail for kids. No café on site, but a great backdrop for picnics.
