A brilliant 20-minute experience based around the last lifeboat in service from Poole, which included its part in the 1940 heroic evacuation of British troops from the French beaches…very informative, unobtrusive volunteers. The lifeboat does most of the silent talking…. especially how small it was for the storms it went out into to rescue seafarers in the treachorous local waters.
This small museum is free, and there is a limited space with the main exhibit being a retired RNLI boat. You don't need more than ten minutes to see the displays, but still well worth a brief visit.
Fascinating little museum with a rich maritime history — a real hidden gem on Poole Quay! The exhibits are well laid out and tell powerful stories of lifesaving at sea, centred around the historic lifeboat Thomas Kirk Wright which took part in the Dunkirk evacuation. Friendly volunteers, informative displays and free entry make it perfect for a quick and rewarding visit. Highly recommended for history lovers and families!
Located in the old Poole Lifeboat house, the Poole Lifeboat Museum is definitely worth a visit. Though fairly small, the old Boathouse houses a treasure trove of exhibits, central to which is their 1938 Surf Class Lifeboat, which was also one of the "Dunkirk Little Ships" by the way. Now, she proudly stands poised at the head of the old slipway, awaiting a call to service that will never come. Outside the museum building is a memorial to all those servicemen who left Poole for the Normandy Landings in June 1944. There is a small gift shop inside the museum which sells a variety of items, all in aid of the RNLI. If you are visiting Poole, add this museum to your list of places to see!
What would we do without them! A very informative little museum that tells such a story of bravery and human compassion, please if you visit don't forget to leave a donation just a swipe of a credit card leaves just £3 we all need to contribute. A little piece of maritime history...... 👍 A must visit
