Wondering museum that combines well with the two others within the Naval Museum combo. The spread of artefacts gives great intro to history of explosive warfare through to current technologies. Staff were friendly and helpful. Wonderful day out. Excellent option for children, families or a lone adult.
A fantastic gem of a museum hidden away in a stunning location with amazing views from the coffee shop over Portsmouth harbour, and Portchester. The building housing the museum give you a real feel as to how gun power was manufactured, and subsequently high explosives for the war effort in WW2 I would defy anyone not to find the whole experience both interest, and educational with lots of local history.
Fascinating museum about navel munitions including weapons systems, missiles, bombs, manufacture and storage. This museum is part of the Portsmouth historic dockyard and there is a water taxi between here and the main dockyard, however it only runs a couple of times a day so be careful with your times. There is a cafe on the museum and a nice brewery outside serving local beer and food.
I got to the Explosive Museum via Portsmouth Historical Dockyard on a multi attraction ticket. I took the water bus from the Dockyard The bus was free with my ticket, It only took 10 mins to cross. It's hourly as well. A great insight on how the ammunition was made/stored for the Royal Navy on Sea and land, and also the people that worked inside the factory. All types of bombs and firearms are on display as well as a few interactions display screens. Some brilliant models are very life like. The cannons and full size guns that were used onboard are proudly displayed, Also you can get up close to them. There's a lovely cafe onsite which I recommend and a toliet The staff were very friendly as well.
Good museum if a little small. As the content is quite focused it's worth checking if it's for you before making the trek but if it is for you, it's the best in class. Well organised and thoughtfuly laid out telling a story, place is a bit of a maze so keep track of your bearings or you could be there longer than planned. Pop over to the powder monkey pub before you leave for a decent pint and quality scotch egg.
