An excellent way to spend a few hours looking ay aviation history. Plenty of information available for each exhibit. The Carroer experience was really good.
This enormous collection of naval aircraft, situated at a working Royal Navy Air Station, is one of the most impressive aviation museums in the country, with over 90 aircraft on display. Exhibits here range from the very early days of powered flight up to current aviation technology, with a huge range of aircraft from the mid to late 20th century. Viewing areas provide a good vantage point to watch helicopters taking off and landing outside. WW2 fighters, helicopters and VTOL aircraft are amongst the highlights, while Concorde 002, equipped with flight test equipment used from 1969 to 1976, is a real standout. This is one of the aircraft you can go inside, a welcome feature of this museum. Displays are of a very high standard throughout the museum, with some amazing showcases including an authentic recreation of an aircraft carrier. This immersive experience features faithfully recreated operations rooms, a landing deck, bridge and more, giving an idea of what life would be like onboard. Facilities include ample onsite parking, a café serving locally sourced food, a large gift shop and wheelchair access to almost all areas of the museum. Adult ticket prices at the time of my visit were £21, representing good value considering the size and high standard of the museum. An excellent indoor attraction which was perfect for a wet day.
A lot to see here, so leave plenty of time. It's incredible to see the size of the aircraft from the past. I don't remember the Buccaneer and Phantom being so big when I worked on them. There is an exhibit where you are inside and on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. It's very well done and realistic. On one of the other displays, it says that Britain used to have 59 aircraft carriers, a little different to now!!
This was my second visit to this extremely interesting museum, the first being in 2012, there have been quite a few changes that kept this visit interesting. There is plenty of free parking and the entry price is reasonable The staff are friendly and helpful with lots of interesting stories and information regarding the exhibits. The displays are really interesting and informative, the exhibits are well kept and have really informative information boards. There is a really nice cafe with hot and cold beverages, cakes, sandwiches and hot pies and pasties. If you are in the area this museum is well worth a visit as it records the history and sacrifces of one of the least well known of the UKs Armed Services.
Best day out I've had in a long time My friend and I paid a visit today and we were amazed at how many aircraft were there. Also the carrier experience was fantastic whoever designed all that deserves a medal or a pay rise! Also the Concorde seminar was informative. Staff were very helpful too. You can even see real military helicopters taking off
