A leading centre for astronomical research located on Blackford Hill. While the operational telescopes are elsewhere, the historic site includes the Victorian domes and visitor centre. Its work in instrumentation and data analysis contributes to major international space and astronomy projects.

I haven’t been there yet but, I am planning to very soon. My maiden name is Blackford and my father says we have some relatives there. I can’t wait to be there!

Brilliant Open Doors visit to the Observatory. All staff super helpful, detailed information of all the work they do and some sun came out to brighten up the day!

Despite having a visitors center and a shop, this place is rarely open. Check the opening times before visiting. Gate attendants are quite cross if you come by to have a look if it's closed (even from the outside) as you interrupt their tea when they have to get up from the guardpost. You have to stay outside the gates which unfortunately does not allow close views of the building. View from the top of the hill is nice and you get a good overlook of the city. Sadly there is much more they could do with this to make it a place for visitors.

It is worth seeing if you are into astronomy and telescopes, it is truly a historic beast. Be sure to make reservations beforehand as it is not open to the public without scheduling one.
