What a gem of a place. Who knew such a fascinating cave was hidden beneath Royston! We absolutely loved our visit to Royston Cave. Our guide, whose name I unfortunately didn’t catch… was absolutely awesome 🤩 So knowledgeable, engaging and genuinely passionate, which made the whole experience incredibly interesting from start to finish. The cave itself is fascinating, mysterious and unlike anything we’ve visited before. The history, carvings and stories surrounding it really capture your imagination. A little tip for visitors: definitely wear sturdy footwear/trainers as it’s slightly steep going down through the tunnel to reach the cave, but it’s completely worth it once you’re inside. We booked online and the whole process was very straightforward. Highly recommend a visit if you enjoy history, mystery or discovering hidden gems right on your doorstep. ✨

Small cave with engaging guide. Booking ahead required. The mystery and varied history were the most interesting bits. More than happy to support local volunteers that have a passion for the cave.

I have lived in the area for 40 plus years and this was my first visit. You would never know it was there, in the middle of town. A tour guide takes you down 21 steps and a steep slope, so buggies and wheel chairs can not go down. Your led into a single chamber where all these lovely ancient carvings have been etched into the wall. Most of them are in very good condition. The guide talks you through each carving explaining the history behind them. Noone knows exactly what the cave was used for, how old it is, who did the carvings etc. The carvings were heavily linked to Christianity, events and figures though. The tour takes around 45 mins, with opputtunity for questions and pictures. They also have a gift shop next door. Currently they have 4 tours a day at the weekend and you do need to book to guarantee your place. My only criticism was my group was quite large with 14 people so was a little squashed and not easy to move around to see everything. Near to the main train station also and places nearby for food and drink if needed. Would recommend a visit

No one knows the real reason for the cave but the popular view is it was built by the Knights templars. It was discovered by accident in 1742 when workmen were putting a bench in the butter market above. It has limited opening times but is worth a visit.
