Oswestry, United Kingdom•4.8(399)•Country Park, Nature Reserve

Explore a stunning lakeside nature reserve in the Berwyn Mountains where woodland trails reveal diverse bird species and mountain scenery.

Lake Vyrnwy is a picturesque man-made reservoir nestled in the heart of the Berwyn Mountains, surrounded by moorland, woodland and meadows that create an exceptional habitat for wildlife. Set against dramatic mountain slopes and fringed by ancient oak and birch woodlands, the reserve offers visitors a chance to experience one of Wales' most biodiverse landscapes. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will encounter an impressive array of species including Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts, Willow Tits, Whinchats, Peregrines, Black Grouse and Hen Harriers. Visitors can explore rocky streams home to Dippers and Goosanders, while keeping watch for hunting Peregrines soaring overhead. The RSPB manages around 5,000 hectares of the estate in partnership with Hafren Dyfrdwy, actively restoring one of Wales' largest blanket bog areas and enhancing woodland habitats. The venue welcomes families of all ages with dog-friendly facilities and pushchair-accessible areas. Visitors benefit from lakeside hides, scenic walking trails and the chance to connect with a working landscape that balances conservation, farming and recreation. The Vibrant Vyrnwy partnership offers regular events, volunteering opportunities and activities that help visitors engage with and care for this special place. An on-site tree nursery provides additional volunteering and learning opportunities.

Bloody lovely walk! Just a shame part of the lop was closed and we weren’t able to find that out until we arrived 😩 we still made the most of it and enjoyed the snowy sights

Came on a wet and windy day during half term to try and complete some geocaches. The red trail is currently closed and there doesn’t seem to be any mention of this on the website so had some disappointed children. But other than that (which can’t be helped) the car parking was very good and reasonably priced. The trails were well sign posted and toilets clean.

Man made in the 19th century but still one of the most scenic spots in Wales, lovely spot to go for a walk or run/cycle for the more energetic! Took these reflective photos on boxing day!

Beautiful place for a day out. The weather wasn't great but I had a two hour walk and probably got 1/5 the way around the lake it's a lot bigger than you think! Definitely bike it next time. There are other walks to do though closer to the dam. The hide was fantastic and saw lots of different birds I could have sat there all day. The dam is just immense and stunning. I can imagine it's an amazing place on a sunny day having a picnic. Parking costs £2 for RSPB members all day.

Great place to spend the day! There are a couple of blue badge bays in the smaller car park where the cafe/bike hire and bird hide are, £4 all day unless you're an RSPB member, then it's reduced! The big car park is a bit further on, same price, more blue badge bays there as well as access to trails and picnic benches, not all trails are easy footing/ wheelchair friendly down that side! There is also an adventure play area for the younger ones just off the car park. We decided to stick to walking next to the lake for ease of the wheelchair, the gradient wasn't bad at all, a few places to stop and take pictures and enjoy the views and peace, and listen to the birds, barely passed anyone considering it was busy! There are kayaking and water sports down on the lake, and there looks to be hire places from what we could see. When we decided that there was no way we could walk the whole lake, we sensibly made our way back to the car, had our picnic, and enjoyed the rest of the lake with a leisurely drive around it!
