Ballycastle, United Kingdom•4.7(726)•Nature Reserve, Wildlife Center

Observe thousands of nesting seabirds including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills from dramatic Atlantic cliffside views at Northern Ireland's largest seabird colony.

Rathlin Island's West Light Seabird Centre is an internationally important destination for seabird watching and wildlife exploration. The reserve is home to Northern Ireland's largest seabird colony, with cliff faces opening directly to the Atlantic Ocean providing ideal nesting grounds for Puffins, Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, and Fulmars. From late April to early August, visitors can enjoy close-up views of thousands of seabirds gathering to rear their chicks, along with the unique 'upside-down' lighthouse that overlooks the dramatic coastline. Beyond the seabird centre, Rathlin Island offers diverse habitats and wildlife experiences. Off-road walking trails at Roonivoolin and Craigmacagan showcase unimproved grassland and several lakes, where visitors may encounter Buzzards, Ravens, Snipe, Skylarks, Irish Hare, and important insect species. The reserve also features a successful habitat restoration project for the globally threatened Corncrake, with birds now regularly returning to breed after a 20-year absence—visitors may hear their distinctive calls from public roads at Church Bay between mid-April and early July. The venue is suitable for families and nature enthusiasts of all ages interested in bird watching, wildlife photography, and coastal exploration. Dogs are welcome, making it an accessible destination for families seeking outdoor adventure combined with world-class seabird viewing opportunities.

Heaven on Earth beautiful scenery and very exposed to the elements of the sea. Next time I visit I plan to bring my e-bike it would be a pleasure to ride around the Island weather permitting of course.

Great spot i highly recommend a visit! BUT there is a big BUT here! There is no public transport from the ferry to the lighthouse and its approximately 7km each way to walk or cycle (bike hire is available so if you can I recommend doing this) so it looks like locals have their own but which they time with the ferries and they tell you as you get on that they can only guarantee a return bus seat in an hour when they drop off the next bus, so in the hight of summer if every bus is full dropping people off there is a risk that every bus back is also full and no spare seats which is such a shame as in all honesty the 55min was not long enough to explore the site, looking for puffins and explore the lighthouse and I would have loved to have explored to land round the lighthouse as well. But I understand the buses are not run by the RSBP, so as I said if your able to walk back then I recommend doing so or hire a bike and do it yourself

Visited with my family, and had an amazing time. Specially the staff were all so friendly and helpful, from the entrance staff and the staff at the bird watching centre. Such a warm welcome. Definitely worth a visit.

Nice day out with the family and although we didn't get to see any puffins as it was too early in the season for them, which we didn't know until we got to the sanctuary, we got to see other breads of birds nesting at the time (6th April 2026) we got the fast ferry over and the slow one back. The fast ferry was really good took about 25 minutes to get to the island and the slow ferry back which was about 40 minutes with a very rough crossing but was ok. We took a picnic with us as it was right on lunch time and glad we did. The bus is cash only with only 33 seats. There was people turned away and had to walk to the sanctuary (20 min bus ride or 90 mins walk) on way back the bus stops at the pub so we killed an hour by getting drinks and snacks from the pub. All in all a nice day out to Rathlin but think I would wait until May to go next time.

Stunning place to visit. Found the volunteer who helped me a really nice guy. Unfortunately I’m disabled so couldn’t make it down to see the puffins. I knew this beforehand but I still wanted to be there with my friend. Would have loved if the RSPB could provide a live feed to a screen inside the centre. Then those who can’t get down at least have some experience of all the birds.
