At 900m above sea level, Shap is the highest outdoor pool in England, and at 16.5m it's one of the shortest too! We went along for an adult swim session which cost £6 per person, booked in advance via their website. Car parking on site is free, next to a park and the west coast mainline trains whizzing past at speed. There are communal male & female changing rooms with one family cubical and clean toilets. There are a couple of showers, but they cost 20p for a hot shower. No working lockers, but belongings can be left poolside and there is a shelter at the deep end of the pool with picnic benches and chairs. The pool was heated to around 25°, which was pleasant for swimming on a cold and rainy July day. Staff were helpful and provided us with a 'Swim Eden Challenge' leaflet - swim all 4 lidos in Eden District Council and get the 5th swim free. Challenge accepted! Thanks for a memorable swim, Shap 🙏
Stayed overnight in Shap. Just so happened it was the summer season opening day of this lovely pool. Booked online. Really enjoyed the swim after a day on the fells. Friendly lady booked us in. Thanks to the lifeguards too - I think it was probably warmer in the pool than out of it.
