Great volunteer run railway highest in England apparently. All the volunteers are friendly and helpful. Different ticket prices they also have gala days. About a 5 mile journey at Slaggyford they have a buffet car and sell locally made jersey ice cream definitely recommend that strawberry and lemon flavours are great

A very enjoyable trip, we were on the early train from Alston which was battery-electric hauled, but saw the steam loco (Naklo) being prepared for the next trip. Had an ice-cream at Slaggyford. Were in the semi-open carriage on the way back and had a bit of a rain shower. We then had a snack lunch in the cafe before watching the next train leave Alston. Visited the workshop gallery (which does have lift access) and has some interesting information boards about the line. It is also worth visiting the hub museum next door (separate entry) for interesting transport exhibits including a model of Alston Station and numerous pedal bikes, motorcycles and cars as well as historical artifacts and information about the past of the town.

Having an afternoon off whilst walking the Pennine Way I could not resist a trip on the steam train and it certainly did not disappoint. The place gives off the wow factor, the staff are amazing, helpful and friendly, cuppa and a cake in the cafe was just delicious, ice cream shop at Slaggyford had a great selection and was also incredible. I’m still raving about the place a month later. Definitely one to add to must places to visit for a great day out list

A trip to scout out the facilities for a future visit. Today consisted of variable weather, sun, rain, sleet, hail, beautiful Cumbria at it's best. We have to keep it green somehow. There's plenty of parking available, the station itself is beautiful with most of it undercover. There's a café or two, and fabulous toilets on the platform farthest from the car park. Between April and October trains depart here at 10:30, 13:00, and 15:00 heading to Slaggyford Station. You can get your tickets online or at the ticket office on the day of travel. There are often special events running that get very busy. There's a museum for anyone seeking greater knowledge, too. It's a short walk/drive into Alston if you're wanting to explore, but it's all uphill. The South Tynedale footpath runs alongside the railway and river.

Very professionally run railway keeping to the highest standards. The volunteers are very friendly and the operators in the train chatty and happy to answer questions and explain how everything works. There are cafes at either end of the line, and the drive through the countryside is beautiful.
