★★★★★ A Perfect Coastal Escape – Stunning History, Coast-to-Coast Origins, and One Beautiful Beach! I have been visiting and staying in St Bees for many, many years and it is a wonderfully quaint village packed with rich history. Beyond the coastal landscape, you absolutely must visit St Bees Priory, a magnificent 12th-century church that dates back to around 1120. Wandering through the village, you can really feel the deep heritage that has shaped this beautiful area over the centuries. It is also incredibly famous as the official starting point for the legendary Alfred Wainwright Coast to Coast Walk. There is a real sense of excitement in the air seeing hikers dip their boots in the sea before setting off on their long journey across England. Of course, the long stretch of golden sand is absolutely magnificent, and what makes it so special is how the experience changes depending on where you choose to access it. If you want a more bustling atmosphere, head to the busier northern end of the beach. It is fantastic for families, featuring great shops, delicious ice cream, swings for the kids, and public toilets. It has everything you need for a classic, fun day out by the sea. However, if you want to escape the noise, the southern end of the same beach is beautifully hidden away. Down at that quieter end, you can fully enjoy the peaceful, raw beauty of the coastline without the crowds. Whether you want deep history, the buzz of the Coast to Coast start, the convenience of the northern end, or the quiet tranquility of the south, St Bees gives you the absolute best of both worlds. A beautiful village that I highly recommend visiting!
