Lovely, albeit short line, but everything is beautifully presentef and the staff is very friendly and attentive.

Only a few weeks ago on sunday 10th of May 2026 (on the way home from an enjoyable weekend holiday to the lake district), I myself (along with my mum, uncle & aunty) visited and marvelled at the superbly nostalgic stainmore railway centre... especially the cleverly restored 'kirkby stephen east' railway station, along with the terrific trackwork, signalling, the rolling stock... as well as locomotives on site & on display with more than a story to tell, I'm also surprised yet profoundly grateful to meet and greet the nice, friendly & kind hearted volunteers that gave us an insightful tour around the station and adjacent shed housing some coaches (including that superbly imposing salloon coach from the classic 1970 film adaptation of the railway children), let alone other rolling stock including a classic ex-LMS milk wagon, It was also a pleasure to come across the station cats residing at kirkby stephen east, whom one of them is called Barras, very unique name for a cat living at such a historically uplifting station, I bet the station cats give/purr a warm welcome to other visitors as well, What a jolly cleverly outstanding job most of the stainmore railway centre's volunteers (past nad present) have done over the years in painstakingly restoring thus forever preserving such a historical 'former junction' station (along with a significant stretch of track... and two signal boxes) whom once part of the old historic 'south durham & lancashire union railway decades ago... now another fine example in the UK's lifelong railway preservation movement, Also, I do hope that someday, the superb stainmore railway centre & it's 'kirkby stephen east' rly station, could have further potential in extending right up to where it could meet thus reach the fellow preserved 'eden valley railway' at warcop out there - even though it'll take decades to happen. Hope to come back and revisit the stainmore railway centre someday. Tip-TOP.... 70 out of 70.

Visited last week with my disabled wife. On entry a young man handed me a Catelouge explaining the history of Stainmore. Just in time for a free tour. Started with a short history on what is happening. Walking down the platform pass coffee and shop plus clean toilets. We proceed to the new Single Box. Views of carriages in repair and explaining what's happening. Returned visiting the Engine Shed. Amazing stock inside as pictures. Than back to the shop and coffee ☕️

Gem of a place, well worth it you you are interested in Railway or Industrial History.

4 star only because we didn’t know the little museum on the station was closed due to the Easter rally being on , I was actually looking forward to seeing it, but will be back to have a look hopefully later this year, very pleasant volunteers and other interesting pieces of history to read and look at. Access was free but donations are kindly accepted, a little steam train journey is available at a reasonable fare, enjoyable for children and adults. Worth the visit.
