This was an beautiful walk one or two slightly step bits with steps but mainly on the flat. The stepping stones where fun to cross. Our dog loved it, however, we did pass a lot of sheep so needed to be on lead at all times. We walked right thought to Milldale where there was a shop selling warm pasties and drinks, we were able to sit by the river to eat them. There were also free WC facilities at the Milldale. Great few hours walking. Would do again.

We visited today (a hot Saturday in may) and we arrived early (7.30am) as we knew it would get very busy!! The walk down to milldale was really pleasant. The surroundings were stunning. But from the very beginning we noticed rubbish every where. Plastic bottles. Carrier bags. Food wrappers. Tissue. The ducks were having to sleep amongst the litter. It ruined the walk. On the way back towards Dovedale it was already getting extremely busy with certain groups of people all bringing big pots & pans & bags of food & beer ready to set up for the day. I have never seen people bringing those sorts of things to a place like that!! By the time we reached the stepping stones again it was already rammed. It was about 10.30. We thought we'd let the dogs have a little paddle & a drink since there were so many people around the steps there was no wildlife to be seen. But we were yelled at immediately by a women working for the national trust to put them back on a lead!! So all the mess, noise & disruption the humans are causing to the wild life is ok but letting your dog have a little paddle is not?! Makes me wonder about the true reason dogs must be kept on leads there. Is it because of the wildlife or is it because of certain people that mostly visit not liking dogs?? I know one thing. We will never visit again!!

Dovedale is a great scenic walk, can be done solo or in groups. No signal once you get to the car park and throughout but its a lovely flat walk with the option to walk as little or as far as you like. Along the route there are cafes in some nearby towns and there are plenty of scenic spots for a picnic too. There are toilets in the main car park.

First time visiting the Stepping Stones at the River Dove. We enjoyed it so much, and the area is very beautiful. It’s best to hike in the morning if you want to see the well-known landmarks. We were lucky to go early and have lovely weather. It’s a long walk, so my advice is to wear hiking shoes. The whole area is peaceful, clean, and full of lovely nature—perfect for a scenic walk or a picnic. It’s also pet-friendly. I will definitely come back here.
