Super busy but what a great experience. The hands-on experience was excellent. The staff was excellent. The shuttle was helpful to take you from new visitor center to stones. The center was large, with great spaces. The food center had great choices. Must stop
Its been a good 15 years since I came to Stonehenge and Wow!! They certainly have made it more educational and enjoyable, the Visitor Centre is a definite must, you can spend a good hour or more in there learning about the history of the area, its local inhabitants of 5000 years ago and how the different stages over the years were formed to create the Stonehenge we all know today. We throughly enjoyed our time here before we got on the shuttle bus to see the actual Stonehenge Rock Circle.
30+ years ago I had a wonderful experience. When you could actually touch the stones feel like you were part of the experience. Now sadly it's become a circus of digital movies and buses. As over 65's we were told no discount at weekends. We purchased 2 adults and a tote bag with book for the pricey sum of £78 for an hour. Too many staff standing around chatting. Although the bus was welcome due to a knee replacement. You can see where the money is being spent. Not on saving and protecting these remarkable stones but in creating a side show. By the way you can park for free on side roads and walk a shorter distance to the stones and get just as close to the circle as the roped off area by English Heritage. It wasn't an experience I intend on repeating. It was something to revere 30+ years ago now it feels sad. The staff are helpful but the entrance costs are choking our tourism
An iconic and well-presented historic site with impressive infrastructure, but hard to ignore how expensive it is for what you actually see. Historically, it’s undeniably impressive - around 5,000 years old and aligned with the solstices - but depending on expectations, it can feel a bit underwhelming given the cost. Maybe worth seeing once, but best approached with realistic expectations. The visitor centre is large and well organised, with a decent exhibition that takes around 10–20 minutes to go through. It includes artefacts, timelines, and video displays explaining how and why Stonehenge may have been built, along with reconstructed Neolithic houses outside. There are also informative signs throughout, both in the exhibition and around the wider site, which help add context to what you’re seeing. Getting to the stones themselves involves either a roughly 2km walk or taking the shuttle bus - and this is where logistics can come into play. When we visited in April, buses were running frequently but still had some queues, and you need to factor this in both ways. In peak summer, it’s easy to imagine this becoming quite time-consuming. Once at the stones, there’s a set walking path around them, keeping you at a distance but still offering good views. It was also very busy even on a spring weekend, with large numbers of tour groups and buses arriving. Cafe: Good indoor and outdoor seating, with a range of snacks (pasties, sandwiches, pastries), though limited main meal options. Toilets: Large, clean, and well maintained at the visitor centre. Parking: Very large and organised, included with entry.
The visitor centre is quite impressive. A large formidable and interesting structure with great clean amenities and lovely exhibits. The carpark is extensive and the path from the carpark to the centre is well paved abd well lit. Easily accessed by the mobility challenged. Parking is included with sime tickets, just validate at the ticket office. The indoor exhibits were spaced out nicely, not crowded and lit well for ambiance and visibility. The outdoor exhibits were lifesize and engaging, allowing for exploration and hands on demonstrations. New exhibits were being constructed at the time. The staff were friendly and helpful. The gift shop is large and spacious. A nice precursor or end to a visit to the stonehenge site.
