Ride miniature steam locomotives and explore model engineering at this unique 2½-acre heritage site with multiple gauge railways and working steam engines.

Sutton Coldfield Model Engineering Society Ltd operates Little Hay Miniature Railway, a fascinating venue where families can experience the world of model engineering and steam locomotives firsthand. Set on a 2½-acre site, the railway features ground and high-level tracks capable of running 7¼, 5, 3½, and 2½ inch gauge locomotives, along with an SM32 Garden railway. Visitors can enjoy train rides on working miniature railways and observe impressive collections of locomotive engines, traction engines, stationary steam engines, and steam-powered boats. The society regularly hosts Steam Up Days (usually the first Sunday of each month and select Saturdays) where the engineering community demonstrates their passion for model engineering and vintage machinery. The venue welcomes families and is particularly suitable for children aged 0+, with special events including Bonfire Night celebrations and Santa Specials throughout the year. Public open days are available on the calendar, with Sundays typically being the best day for visitors to explore and take train rides. Private birthday parties can also be arranged at the venue, making it an ideal destination for memorable family celebrations.

We visited over the summer with our two young boys and had the best afternoon. We all rode the miniature trains, had some lovely cake and tea, and met lots of very friendly volunteers. Last night we returned for the bonfire and fireworks event and it was brilliant. We got there early and barely had to queue for any of the train rides or for the food. The train rides were great and the food (hotdogs/burgers/baked potatoes) were lovely. The bonfire was huge and kept us warm and the fireworks were incredible - the best we’ve seen in a very long time. The whole place isn’t too big so it didn’t feel too busy or overwhelming which is a bonus when you’ve got young children. A true hidden gem, especially considering it’s volunteer run! We’ve already booked our tickets for the Christmas event and can’t wait to return.

My 3 year old boy adores this place. Riding mini trains, watching model trains running and having a bacon sandwich. The real cherry on top is how friendly all of the volunteer staff are. After our first visit, he kept asking to go back, so I told him he has to save up some money for the donation box. For a solid week he collected coins from us and his grandparents, not putting a single any of it towards treats. He had a little over £5 in the end so we had to go back and he put all of it in the donation box. He loves this place that much :-)
