Sywell Aviation Museum

Northampton, United Kingdom•4.7(907)•Heritage Site, Museum

Explore Northamptonshire's aviation heritage through restored aircraft, historic cockpits, and exhibits spanning from early aviation through WWII and beyond.

Sywell Aviation Museum preserves the rich history of Sywell Aerodrome and Northamptonshire's aviation heritage from the early days of flight through the Second World War and beyond. Founded in 1998, the museum has grown from three original Nissen huts (historic buildings that served as USAAF bomb fuzing sheds during WWII) to include multiple exhibition halls showcasing aircraft, cockpits, and memorabilia. Visitors can explore several themed halls including The Paul Morgan Hall housing the museum's cockpit collection and a complete WW2 Link Trainer, The American Hall featuring two restored B-17 bombers (the Norton and Blakesley), The RAF Hall with Battle of Britain exhibits, and The Luftwaffe & Cold War Hall. External displays include a Hawker Hunter fighter jet, Handley-Page Jetstream, and English Electric Canberra. The museum also offers the Chipmunk Experience, allowing visitors to interact with this historic aircraft. Suitable for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, families, and school groups, the museum serves as both an educational resource and a tribute to those who lost their lives in 20th-century conflicts. Run entirely by unpaid volunteers, Sywell Aviation Museum has earned multiple heritage awards and maintains partnerships with leading aviation heritage organizations. While modest in scale compared to major aviation museums, it provides an engaging and authentic experience of local aviation history.

Wonderful gem of a museum, especially if you are interested by war memorabilia and the workings of wartime aeroplanes. It isn't very big, but is absolutely packed with displays and information. You probably could spend days in there reading all the information. Free to go in, but hopefully people will realise it is worth donating on the way out, to help keep it going. Really friendly people with a passion for their museum. Definitely worth an hour or two if you are local.

This place is something truly special, if your lucky enough to visit when they are open. Today 4th April 2026 was their season opening event. The carpark was full of antique cars and war machines etc. Highly recommended! No booking required or advance ticket purchase. If fact there was no ticket to purchase, although they do ask for donations. BTW The Aviator Hotel next door has delicious food. The Cirrus bar is worthy of a visit too!

Super place, punches above it's weight as a small volunteer run museum. Packed with exhibits & knowledgeable staff. Just check it's open - though the sentinels are pretty cool anyway! Hang around the airfield, a couple of spitfires, Mustang & me109 (Italian) fly test & guest flights so you may see one on the tarmac or in the air :)
