Tessier Gardens

Torquay, United Kingdom•4.7(281)•Botanical Garden, City Park

Explore a historic botanical garden with rare plant collections, a tranquil Sun temple, and sensory features including a scented garden for the blind.

Tessier Gardens is a small and delightful park situated between Babbacombe and St. Marychurch in Torquay. Gifted to the town in 1933 by Mrs H A Tessier, the gardens feature a distinctive 'Sun temple' constructed the same year as a tribute to her generous donation. The venue showcases an impressive collection of plants, including Tree Ferns in the Fernery area and carefully curated shady borders throughout the grounds. A unique feature is the scented garden for the blind, designed and planted in 1975, with botanical names of plants etched in Braille on copper plates. This thoughtful addition demonstrates the gardens' commitment to inclusive design and accessibility. Recent enhancements include a redesigned entrance area that further enriches the visitor experience. The gardens provide a superb setting for quiet contemplation and peaceful enjoyment of the tranquil environment. Please note: Children under 18 are not permitted in the gardens in accordance with the original 1933 covenants. The park gates are locked at night, and dogs are not permitted within the park area.

Tessia gardens is a Hidden gem in the heart of Babbacombe. The gardens are absolutely beautiful. If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is the place. Gardens were gifted to the town of Babbacombe, Torquay, in 1933 by Mrs. Amy Tessier in memory of her husband, a London jeweller. A key feature of the covenant is the "adults-only" restriction, preventing children under 18 from entering. In honor of the gift, a 'Sun temple' was built the same year, and a sensory garden was added in 1975.
